Pours deep red, no head
Smell big rich fruity caramel, toffee, pudding sticky.
Taste proper English Barleywine, light hop, lots of sticky sweetness, bit spice, caramel and a tiny bit of alcohol on the end.
Mid to full bodied.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Colour...amber-garnet with little head. Nose..."sugar in the raw", burnt sugar sirop, and toffee. Palate...plenty of oaky dryness here and mild sweetness that pairs well with the hop presence. The hops, though not predominant, step aside long enough to allow the flavours of toffee, turbinado and butterscotch pudding to come through. Nice and woolly!

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Limited Edition bottle number 513 of 1100. Purchased on March 11, 2011 at the Howe Sound Brewery in Squamish, BC. Colour: Slightly deep red with low but stubbornly durable slightly brown head. Nose: A wonderful collection of fruits...crushed red grapes, peach, summer cherry, nibs. Swirling brings out a suttle butterscotch. All of this among mounds of candied barley. Taste: Medium-high sweet, medium sour, light bitter. An instant touch of soap that quickly vanishes and opens up a chest of vanilla and creamy caramel. The middle crackles with barley and a slight spice emerges. The finish has a distinct aged rum note that is absolutely delicious. Quite sweet but Howe Sound has recognized this by making the bottle size 187ml, so never does it become overbearing. Absolutely stunning stuff.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: FEB 25, 2013 Wow... why do they make so little of this? An incredible barleywine, intense malt / earthy / nutty aroma and velvet mouthfeel with alcohol, caramel malt flavours. Not aggressive, just exquisitely balanced. EDIT: Iíve shared a couple bottles with barleywine virgins and itís getting unanimous approval. Each time better than the last. Iím raising this a few points.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cloudy brown with a small pale head that leaves some lacing. Aroma is raisins, chocolate, brown sugar, dates. Medium bodied, sweet and slightly sticky on the palate with a toffee finish and slightly metallic aftertaste. Flavour is raisins, brown sugar, salty liquorice. Very tasty, quite Belgian in character.

Bottle. Pours dark brown/red with white lacing. Aroma of dark fruits, candied sugars, toffee, molasses, and some nuts. Flavour the same, some booze, light citrus bitterness. Thinner than expected. Some nice flavours. Not bad.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Garnet color small head. Aroma is muted but fruity. Flavor is also fairly fruity but lacks the malty backbone I expect. Quite thin.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
2012 Bottle - A tad better than I expected. Chewy and malty with plenty of caramel sweetness. Full bodied and a little boozy.

2.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 11/20
Dark brown pour with a red tinge and a thick tan head. Nose is baked banana bread, roasted almonds, brown sugar - sweet and pleasant. The body is a lot lighter than expected with a slick mouth feel. Taste is predominantly sweet malt with dried fruits and a bitter-sweet, boozy finish. I found this beer lacking in body and complexity. Disappointing.
