3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Had this during a sampling at a local liquor store and wasn’t impressed, which stands true for most of their stuff... this is one of their better ones, but that’s not saying much.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
In the bottle from HyVee CB. Pours a very dark brown to black with a thick and creamy beige head of lasting renown. The aroma is very chocolatey and caramel. Even a deceptive scent of bourbon. The flavor is very tart at first, but subsides to a chocolate maltiness. Sweetness recovers the sourness at just the right time.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Translucent brown pour with very little head. Nuts, chocolate, Flavor is a bit infected, some chocolate, some nuts. A bit thin. I’m wondering whether the infection just telling of bottling problems?

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep brown body with a thin foamy brown head. The aroma is sort of walnut like with a silage-like grain. The flavor is a light roasty brown malt up front with a light charcoal finish. Subtle walnuts. The palate is medium-light bodied and clean but there’s a strange nutty thin. Very average beer. Much better as it decanted.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAY 19, 2009 Pours black with thin brown highlights, tiny tan particualtes and a 1 finger creamy tan head that has poor retention but fades to a skim and ring that lasts for the rest of the glass and leaves sparse lacing. Aroma roast, chocolate, sweet toasted grain, oatmeal cookies and some dark fruit notes. Flavor is nice big roast, milk chocolate, sweet granola cereal, plum, earthy notes. Finish has some char, bitter hops and a nice floral and herbal hop quality. Palate seems watery and keeps the experience rather abrupt.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark brown pour with a minimal tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate and roasted malt. Flavor of chocolate, burnt malt, mild milk, licorice. Very straight-forward, but pretty tasty. Medium mouthfeel, would probably give it a 3.5 if I could. Overall this is an enjoyable beer, and a bit underrated I would say.
