JoeMcPhee (3807), Jackson Heights, New York, USA May 30, 2005 Dark brown beer with a thin white head. Served too cold, but at least it was served in a footed glass rather than in a normal pint glass. Aroma is quite malty and spicy. Smells like it was fermented with 1214. A bit of coffeeish aroma with apple and date fruitiness. Light sweetness up front with a bit of nuttiness and lightly toasted malt. Yeasty spiciness is prominent in the nose and in the mouth. There is also a bit of acidity in the finish that makes the beer dance on the palate. Long toasty finish. Much better than I was expecting from Hugo’s. A worthy seasonal.
Oakes (6979), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Sep 11, 2005 Called Mad Monk at the GCBF. Dark amber-brown colour. Extremely sugary, with some dark fruit notes. Cloying...had trouble finishing it. The sugar just ran roughshod over my palate and I had a hard time sorting anything else out. I’m definitely looking for more balance in my Belgian strong styles. CapFlu (3340), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Mar 18, 2005 (Draught) Thin, white creamy head with a deep orange body. Nose and flavour is of a fruity malt with a sweet, acetate finish. Above a~verage.
