COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

Bottle pours red-brown with a khaki colored head. Aroma is caramel, nuts, and some earthy hops. Flavor shows the same with some distinguishable grass/tobacco, that becomes almost ashy at times. Something tells me that a good food pairing would make this beer shine. It’s pretty good as a session, but it almost teases to the point where I feel like there is something else there. Overall body is moderate and carbonation is relatively soft.

It’s a decent brown ale. Nothing in the way of aroma -- nice deep caramel color and nice light malt flavor -- completely non offensive. How much hemp is in here? - I can’t discern the flavor of the hemp if there is any.

Bottled. Poured rich, coppery-brown with a short cap of khaki head. The aroma picked up dry molasses and caramel notes with most definite herbal accents.. touches of honey and lemongrass as it warmed up. The flavor found nutty notes and lesser molasses at the core.. dry herbal notes and earthy bitterness surrounded.. finished dry and herbal over nice nutty malts. Light-medium bodied and dry on the palate.. the seeds were a nice accent to the malt bill here.. got caught up on a few places on the palate. I’d drink more.

Highly disappointing. Pours dark brown/black with off white head, aroma is some chocolate and roasted notes with a bit of resiny hops. Taste is resiny hops up front with some chocolate and coffee ending roasted and bitter. Not at all hemp-like, with more porter like qualities.

On tap at Pap. Hazy amber brown pour with a small foamy head. Hemp overpowers every other aroma and flavor. Kind of dirty tasting. Like drinking bong water.

Chestnut brew with an amber presence and small ivory head. Aroma and flavor show a malty nuttiness along with floral hops and spices. Medium mothfeel is highly drinkable and enjoyable enough to be sessionable.

Hemp aroma is fairly pronounced, and comes out even more in the flavor. Some herbal hops add some complexity; finishes a wee bit astringent but not bad.

750ml bottle. Bomber. Much better than anticipated. Pours medium brown with a nice creamy head. A solid brown ale with a unique character. (actual tasting was on 2/19 - catching up on a marathon tasting session from a couple weeks back)
