COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

Pours a clear dark brown with a reddish hue. Very little head. Aroma is malty. Taste of a decent brown, with (I guess) a hemp after-taste. Not that good of a palate, a little rough. All in all, this one is just OK.

12 fl oz bottle from Finger Lakes Beverage, served cold in a tulip glass.

App.: Deep mahogany, clear with a so-so ashen-tan head. Aroma: Oddly sweet, grassy/grainy, a little buttery – like it was oaked for some reason, weedy (not ganja), strangely oily smelly, odd. Palate: Medium body, moderate, rounded effervescence. Flav.: Sort of buttery biscuit to brown sugar malt, grassy/leafy/grainy, some darker malts, a little burnt sugar, still odd; dry with a little bitterness and a somewhat clean, watery finish with lingering bitterness and dark malts (restrained).

Finally tried a Firestone Walker brew and it was THIS??

Bottle. Brown/orange color with an brown sugar head that quickly fades. The nose is light, a bit of brown bread and raisin, there’s a floral herby aroma that may be the hemp, but I’m not certain. The taste is initially tart and a bit astringent, the hops are nicely balanced by the crystal malts. The palate is light and a bit watery.

Malty and very nutty in aroma, almost like almonds. The flavor has a bit of tea up front with a decent maltiness. Could’ve done without the tea flavor, otherwise a solid brown ale.

12oz bottle pours a nice deep brown that’s nuanced by garnet hues supporting a tan head. The mild aroma is a mix of roasted malts, chocolate malts and a pleasing firm level of clumpy wet earthiness. The taste is similar with a tasty mix of roasted malts, chocolate malts, some milk chocolate bar and a yummy earthiness. There seems to be something meandering around the earthiness but I can’t put words to it. Maybe it is the hemp or maybe I’m over analyzing. Along the edges of the flavor are thin rings of spicy hops. Overall the aroma is a bit timid buy everything else is spot on good.

Bottle courtesy of adsnielsen (thanks AAron) poured a clear reddish brown with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of cocoa, carmel and light toasted malt. Palate was medium bodied and crisp. Flavors of cocoa and carmel with a crisp malty finish.

Bottle; pour is murky dark amber / brown with a khaki head in this glass; retention on the mild side, really, with very light lacing present. the nose is underwhelming, really; brown malts and... ale yeast and....the flavor profile follows it for me. there is a bitterness present from the hop profile, light brown malts, and a bit of herbals. an easy drinker

It pours dark clear amber with a small tan head. It smells of pure malts, sweet and rich like a brown ale normally is. The flavor is a sweet malt brown ale base with a huge earthiness, like green, chlorophyll almost. This comes from the hemp I assume giving the beer a unique flavor.
