COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

Pours dark ruby brown with a thin light brown head. Aroma of toasted malts, milk chocolate and fruit. Taste has lots of chocolatey flavor with some mild bitterness and sweet fruit. The sweetness is a little strong and I wish there was more of the roasted malt.

Draught pint pours a medium brown with a light tan head that does not last. Aromas are slight roast malt and light sweetness. Taste is a decent light roast taste with medium body. Very drinkable, but not complex . Overall a good, but not great brown ale.

Whole Foods Market, DC sixer ($7): Pours a transparent brown color with a very quickly dissipating head that leaves a touch of lacing. Aroma is kind of nutty and metallic (which I know should be reserved for a taste). Taste is malty at the front. A modicum of grassy hops are present in the finish and continue into the aftertaste. I eat plenty of hemp seed in my granola and whatever else, and I couldn’t really line up that hemp taste with anything here. I guess I have to try another hemp beer to see if I can pick up the pattern. A bit too sweet I think, but a perfectly acceptable session beer, although not great in my opinion.

On tap at Champps in Marlton, NJ. Hazy chestnut pour under a thin brown head with thin fingers of lacing. Lightly malty aroma with milk chocolate and a hint of lemon. Nutty, caramel flavor with some butterscotch and coffee. A citrusy hop note smacks you from behind every now and then. Light creamy texture and a semisweet, medium long finish. A nice brew.

Date: July 28, 2011 Mode: Draft Source: Flying Saucer, Kansas City, MO Appearance: Opaque dark brown with minimal head, minimal amount of lacing. Aroma: Malty, earthy. Flavor: Consistent with aroma, but light on taste, thin bodied. Other: Good unique concept, but a little to be desired on the execution.

At the Lucky Monk. Not sure how I feel about this. Decent brown ale with a earthy grassy off flavor. Must be the hemp? Interesting, sort of. Serving: Bottle

Sample at taproom. Light brown with light mocha head. Hemp, nuts, little bit of vomit. Did not like the mouthfeel (thin but cloying), low carbonation, and some funk and off aftertaste.

On tap; poured a dull cola brown. Aroma of coffee, brown malt, herbs and earth. Flavor of dull coffee, earth, brown malt, with a bit of sweetness and alcohol. Nice .
