COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

It pours basically brown with no head and decent enough clarity. The aroma has the nutty character of a brown ale with a bit of herbs and light hops. The body is thin. The taste is slightly bitter with a slight bite at the end. Nothing special.

Clear tan with a reddish tint and almost no head. Aromas of dark fruit and raisins. Thin bodied with very little carbonation. Good roast malt and light chocolate taste. Very little aftertaste. I’m pretty sure I got a bad bottle, so I’ll try to rate this again if I can find another one.

light brown amber pour witha tiny white head. Aroma is caramel malt, bread, toffee, herbal hoppiness, very earthy. Mouthfeel is light, slippery. Flavor is a rich toffee malt with light herbal notes. Earthy and nice flavors, but light enough to make for pretty easy drinking. not bad.

Bottle: Pours a clear dark orange with a thin white head, rich malts in the aroma with some honey, starts and ends lightly sweet, ample carbonation, light bodied.

Medium brown with a small off-brown crown. Aroma of toffee, caramel and mild nuttiness. Taste is an average brown ale with mild nuttiness, caramel and light hops. Not noticing anything that would resemble hemp, but not sure I’ve ever seen it used as an adjunct before.

On tap at Papago. Pours a dark shade of amber with a trim beige head. Smells and tastes of hops, cocoa, toasted malt, and rope. Goes down easy, but not particularly memorable.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, almost black with light tan head. Nose of dark malt, hops, caramel and wood. Taste is also woody. A bit muted. Lots of dark malt and herbs. Good herbal feel to it.

Cola color with a very small, off-white head. The aroma is mostly strong caramel, with some brown sugar, and spices. The flavor is lighter and crisper than I had expected. Sweet, with caramel and brown sugar, but reminds me of a watered-down porter. Abrupt finish.
