COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

On tap at the Yard House. Dark brown brew with a small amount of tan head. Very malty aroma with some slight chocolate and hops. Almost has a rye-like quality to the flavor. A bit of nuttiness as well. Not bad but not much going on. The only hemp ale I’ve ever had.

Sampler at the W&C in Ballwin, Mo. It poured an amber color. The aroma was of caramel malt, with some spice and light hops. The flavor was malty and very light on the hops.

A nice, dark, mahogeny with a firm cap of white. The aroma on this beer is sweet malt and cookie. Chocolate, hop, and slight caramel. The flavor kind of just drops off at the end. Decent but nothing to really note.

Bottle. Pours dark red brown with medium off white head. Much lacing. Aroma is grass and wet rope. Malty taste, full bodied, with an unpleasant rope finish. This would have been much better without the hemp.

12 oz. bottle. This beer pours a very dark brown and has a small light beige head that soon becomes a ring. Finding the aroma takes a bit of effort but dark fruit, chocolate, and hops can be found. The flavor is much more robust than the nose. It begins with rye and light chocolate. Hops are tasted but add more bitterness than flavor. That chocolate has something along with it, perhaps the hemp. There are also some light nuts. There just isn’t enough going on

Bottle in KC. Very dark red/brown appearance with a tan head. Slightly nutty, caramel malty nose with a slight foreign smell that must be the hemp. Fairly bitter, medium bodied brown ale with a slight nuttiness. Somewhat malty finish. I think the flavor is too subdued.

Pours very dark brown with a crimson hue with a soapy beige head. The aroma has toasty malt, phenolic spice, odd nuttiness and light hazelnut - fairly dry. Medium / thin body with a moderate amount of micro-sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with light toast, cream, the odd nuttiness (I’m guessing its the hemp) and light spice. The finish has some toastiness and is a bit tinny. The flavor is this one is not very bold. Easy drinking and decent enough beer.

Spicy, mildly hoppy brown. I guess this recipe was inherited by FW and it isn’t one of their better beers.
