Bartzilla (397), San Diego, California, USA Feb 22, 2008 I’ll rate this for historical purposes. One of the gateway craft beers, along with Red Tail and Arrogant Bastard, back in the day. Used to go through a couple pitchers of this at a time at the Tilted Stick because Chip had a tough time giving this stuff away because it was too different at the time. I flocked to it.
There was that time I put my clothes in the wash at the launderette next door to the Stick and decided I’d stop in for some lunch and a beer while my clothes tumbled. Fast forward to about 11pm and a solid 3 or 4 pitchers of Humboldt Hemp Ale to my head and it was a bitter pill to see the launderette closed. Didn’t even get my clothes to the dryer until the next day. Solid times.
Zbizzle (1), el cajon, California, USA does not count Aug 13, 2008 poured from 12 oz bottle. surprisingly dark, caramel, coffee aromas. there’s a little metallic aftertaste but not to bad. I have no idea why they call it "hemp" ale, but it’s over all a good beer. rayOfBeer (219), El Cerrito, California, USA Jul 18, 2008 Poured from 22oz bottle a dark brown with large tannish head. Aromas of roasted grains, bisquits and caramel. Flavor has a toasted malt graininess, with a touch of sweet caramel and a little coffee. The palate is malty and lightly bitter with a spicy tingle that is not from the carbonation. This one has a sweet start and a slightly dry finish. I found it to be an enjoyable beer. I’d drink one again. Hank1980 (343), Athens, Georgia, USA Jul 6, 2008 Bottle. Pours dark brown with an average beige head that laces. Nose of roasted malts and a mild herbal quality. Taste has some chocolate roasted bitterness and some mild herbal notes, not really a good taste or mix. Finish is smooth and a little bitter. Beer is medium bodied. Mild carbonation. timfoolery (333), California, USA Jun 13, 2008 Bottle from Beerfest at Sudwerk in Davis, CA. This beer wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. Hemp typically makes you think good thoughts, but this brew didn’t. Eh. DTM (361), Winters, California, USA Jun 1, 2008 Bottle from the Beer Fest in Davis, CA.Poured a copper color with an off-white head. Not spectacular about this one. Sweet malty flavor with a slighty metallic aftertaste. I did notice a little bit of the spicy flavor. Not bad, but nothing I would buy again.
