Draught at the brewery, a clear brown with a large pillowy head. As familiar with a rauchbier, Smoky ham in the aroma. Nice and smooth all the way through, with that smoky flavour, very moreish.

A Mes rate: 50cl bottle at St. Albans Beer Festival 2006. I love Rauchbiers. Sadly this was a little bit of a let down. Rather metalic unfortunately. Vanilla and cheese aroma with just a faint hint of the smoke. Nice looking amber body with a slight but well behaved tan head. Just not enough smoke in the flavour. Slightly salty with a pleasant fresh hop note too. Creamy malt finish. Prickly palate.

(bottle, bought at the brewery´s Ausgabestelle) Clear reddish amber colour with a frothy beige head turning into a small creamy layer. Slightly dusty beechwoody nose. Light bitter flavour, medium body, smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel with a soft carbonation. Initial earthy taste of dark malt with beechwood smoke, light notes of smoked meat; moderately bitter, nutty and smoky finish with the alcohol well hidden. Balanced and tasty brew.

500 ml bottle graciously provided by Bamberg explorer MartinT and shared with him, Rastacouere and tiggmtl. Dark cherry-cola color, quite clear and lightly bubbly with a faint head....light sweet smokiness to the nose with a touch of vegetal character at first that thankfully dies off....nicely balanced sweet and acidic characteristics in the body, huge thick smoky malts, a touch syrupy which can work in this style for me, hints of toffee and cider....a bit on the light side overall but quite pleasant.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JUN 20, 2006 Impressions from the Gaststätte:
-A ring of head circles the clear copper/amber.
-A whispering fruity smoke makes up a diplomatic aroma.
-Flavor presents stronger smoke, and may be compared to Spezial’s levels of smokiness.
-Roasted malts and sweet caramel show the malt’s prowess.
-Earthiness closes the glass, along with drops of water.
On tap at the brewery.

genuine rauchbier, i wasn’t diappointed but i’ve had better ones. very upfront smoky taste which fades away into a real nice malty brew. ends very bitterish. not very balanced, but not bad.
