Bottled, 500ml from Favourite Beers, Cheltenham, Gloucs. Black with no head, flat. Sweetish, dark, fruity malts, no real bitterness or depth. Thinnish, which I presume is what they mean by light. A little disappointing.

Cask at Pigs Ear. Clear dark amber beer, residual white head. Light palate, semi soft and semi dry. Sulphur on the nose and in the mouth. A jarring juxtaposition of sweet fruits kicks in during the mid. A mess!

Cask at Pig’s Ear Beer Festival, London. Hazy mahogany colour. Aroma of rotting eggs. Sweetish and fruity with medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Overwhelming flavour of sulhur and egg fart. Eh...

Cask (gravity dispense) at Pigs Ear Beer Festival (Day 1) on 6 December 2011. Very dark brown colour. As Pat says, there is a rather eggy element to the aroma. Light body. Very easygoing for 6.0%. Sweetish and fruity. Maybe a touch of licorice. Not much depth to the flavours. Bit of a mess really. Maybe a bit green? Certainly something not quite right here. Flagged for re-rate. Default score in the meantime.

ALLOVATE (1719) - Butler, WA, AUSTRALIA - NOV 7, 2011
Bottle from Tuckers Maltings, drank instore with the friendly owner who sadly opted for a cup of tea instead.
Off the shelf, pours a deepest blackened ruby, quite radiant when held to the light. A solid, compact off-white crowns dons it a traces a fine lace. Strong and thick, well pronounced malty nose with hints of Milo and Ovaltine, dusty cocoa and bitter heavily roasted cacao beans, molasses and treacle and a tinge of damp flower bed. As robust as the nose, the palate is tarrish thick, smooth and silky. Pronounced treacle and ashen smoke offer two ends of the flavour spectrum. Lots of charred wood, bitter chocolate, Ovaltine, cocoa powder and vanilla fill out the divide well. It is sweet, very rich in flavour and well rounded. Long in the swallow, an almost overpowering smokiness settles in to stop it becoming cloying. Seems to outweigh it 6.0%, and I have no idea what they mean by ’Light’ Stout. This is a great slow sipper, a dessert style Stout. Very nice! (50cL, no date stamp, Tuckers Maltings, Newton Abbot, Devon)

Bottle from Humpers of Staple Hill. Cola coloured with no head and slight carbonation. Sweet roasted malts, tropical fruit and chocolate aroma. Light mouth feel, with flavours of caramel, honey and coffee, leading to a dryish finish. Good.
