The brewery produce a beer called ’half bore’: this is twice the strenght! The beer is supposed to be served cool, so as I’ve only just plonked it down from my beer fridge I’ll write a bit more to allow it to change from a bit cold to cool. The label claims Goldings and Boadicea hops are used, the Boadicea being a late addition to give its ’high Alpha content’ a chance to make the beer have a smooth bitter finish. Hold on there is also local Devon Honey and Golden Syrup in the brew, so it might be a bit sweet as well? OK, time to crack open the bottle.
This is a bottle conditioned beer, so I poured it carefully into my Abbots Ale glass tankard so as not to disturb any sediment.
The beer poured a beautiful, clear, chestnut red, bright and shiny: on top a majestic crown of white foam, the head stayed and provided a lacing as heavy and thick as I’ve ever witnessed.
The aromas where of un-sweetened molasses and yeast, some pine hop esters along with an alcoholic presence that is hard to explain but is clearly there with some beers. Not the nasty super lager alcohol over-hit, this seemed classier and more controlled if you can follow my thoughts.
The taste is malts all the way: until the mouth begins to dry, then a hop bitterness arrives. Even during the bitterness stages of each sip a hint of sweetness (the honey and syrup) is never far away and the alcohol content doesn’t hide a great deal either.
I really liked the beer, a little too much alcohol for the flavours maybe, but I’m being unkind, this is a great winters brew: A roaring fire and a few mates, this beer would go down a treat: as it did tonight as I drank it alone!
