Hyde (17), Toronto (Don Mills), Ontario, Canada Jul 4, 2008 Big thanks to Matt7215 for sharing this 1997 vintage!
Hazy amber-brown with an off-white head, some retention, good lacing (impressive for an 11 year old). Big boozy aroma with a little salt toffee. Boozy flavour that’s smooth, nice breadyness, brown sugar, toffee. Alcohol is certainly warming.
It’s well-attenuated with some residual sweetness, though the alcohol leaves a drying finish. It’s very drinkable for its weight.
DragonStout (1225), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 18, 2008 Alright #1200, shared with BeerVirgin.Poured a gloomy amber with a virtually no head.Huge sweet caramel nose.Flavor was sweet, caramel like with a nice boozy, warming finish. BeerVirgin72 (621), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 18, 2008 My 600th rate! WOO HOO! Botte courtesy of Dragonstout. Thank you so much Brian for the beer and for sharing this special rate with me. Pour was a murky amber. No head. Aroma was delightful. Sweet carmalized sugar all the way. Flavor was almost sickening sweet up front...The very light in the middle, almost disappointing, then finished with a lonnnnng alcoholic burn. Stayed in my mouth burning like black pepper long after the last swallow. ChazyRPh (571), Chazy, New York, USA Aug 14, 2008 Bottle from my cellar, courtesy my brother DYCSoccer17. Hazy amber brown pour with no head. Lots o floaties. Sugary aroma, with some ethanol present in the nose. Wow, sweet...almost cloyingly so. Alcohol is hidden quite well, although I am not sure how old this beer is therefore it may have just mellowed nicely. Drinkable in small amounts, warming finish. Thinnish mouthfeel, which is appropriate. Good beer, I just wish it was a little more balanced. Vac (2274), San Diego, California, USA Aug 8, 2008 Bottle sampled at RBSG ’08. Pours with a deep amber body topped by a thin head with little lacing. It’s slightly sweet and malty with a nice candy sugar note and a touch of toffee. nice. Medium to full bodied and warming. mgumby10 (1651), West Palm Beach, Florida, USA Aug 5, 2008 Pours a dark red maroon, with a small off white head. Smells very rich and malty, almost syrupy. The flavor really engendered that description as it was very syrupy and very malty. The alcohol was overapparent at times and didnt seem to mesh well at all. No real semblance of balance here whatsoever. Just too sweet, with nothig else going on. Color me disappointed.
