4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottled 1997. Huge caramel and plum/prune nose, some raisins, some light sherry-like oxidation. Taste is moderately sweet, lightly bitter, a ton of raisins, some port-like notes, lots of toffee and just very vinous all around. Nice stuff.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
1984 version. Flat dark brown mess. Visually this beer is not appealing at all. Tons of tar, rubber, tobacco leafs, sherry, port, dark chocolate. Incredibly intense incredibly in hood shape. Tastes like aged Chinese liquor. Still, every sip was extremely intense and highly enjoyable. I am glad we split a bottle five ways, it is just way to much for a single person to drink.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
330cl bottle i think (bottled in 1996). not sure why no one ever wanted to try this one when i offered it well, once again i digress.... pours a semi dull and lifeless dark toffee brown, not completely opaque but prelly well non-transparent. head is non-existent, perhaps a few small bubbles at its edges... aroma is rich and abounded with dark fruits, figs, dates, raisins, you name it alongside an aggresive toffee presence. the age shows with some very mild oxidized papery nutty notes but this one is full of vivacious rich sweetness... flavors are much akin to the aroma attributes. sweet, rich, toffee galore while decorated with sweetened dark fruits. quite a display and meshing between the sweetness of the malts and the dark fruit textures. holiday fruit cake definitely comes to mind as i drink this. its strength provides a warmness not necessarily down the throat but more so intoxicating in the brain (what? not sure). body is medium maybe treading towards the thin side but not by much. it’s sweet, that is without a doubt and a sipper no less. light carbonation is a reminder to say that "yes, i have plenty of life left in me". i’ve heard of older bottles tasting quite as nice and i’m pleased with the manner at which this presented itself in all aspects.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle 1996 vintage poured a hazy reddish brown with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of prune, raisin, fig, molasses, maple, light bitter chocolate and light earthiness. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth with a warming finish. Flavors of prune, raisin, fig, maple, dates, molasses and carmel with a smooth warming lingereing lightly sweet dark fruity finish. This one is ageing nicely, too bad I only have 2 left!

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
A: Pours a nice nutty brown color with a medium head. The head totally disappears leaving behind a few small lily pads and no lacing.
S: Pure sweetness in a bottle. You could pass is off as some of the best maple syrup straight from Vermont.
T: Wow this is a big boy. Tons of nice sweet malty flavors. Raisins and figs stand out. The booze also makes its appearance in a big way. It’s sharp on the tongue to balance out the sweetness and it slowly burns its way down your throat.
M: Big bold, and thick. There is a sting from the ABV.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Enormous thanks to Cletus for sending a 1997 bottle my way! Lots of folks have been giving less love to the 97 vintages in prior ratings, which only makes me want to try older vintages more because this bottle was wonderful. The beer pours a deep red and is slightly hazy, the head is very small at first but the beer falls flat pretty quickly. the aroma starting seeping out of the bottle pretty strongly before I even poured the beer in a glass. The beer features aromas of fruity port, licorice, caramel, and some booze. The flavor is licorice, sherry, port, some fruitiness and some alcohol. There are fruity flavors like fruit cake and cherry. The beer is lightly roasty with some dark chocolate notes.
