33 cL bottle as Hurlimann Sternbrau Export Bier. Pours clear and golden yellow with a fully gone head. Mild malty aroma. A bit cardboardish flavoured and flat malty to vague bitter. Ends dry and medium bitter. A bit on the boring side.

Bottle. [Tasting session @ Papsoe] Small fizzy off-white head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Clear pale golden color. Aroma of flower, floral, grain, caramel. Light bodied with a soft carbonation and light dry texture. Light sweet flavour with light counter bitterness. Light dry and bitter finish.

Bottled 50cl. Sampled at Brasserie Federal, Zürich. It pours a pale golden beer with a creamy head. The nose is of hops and soy sauce. It reminds me of Feldschlösschen original. Quite a lot of tobacco sneaking in. The flavor is maltier. Low bitterness. Poor hop profile. Light bodied. Soy sauce showing up again in the taste. Pretty much like a Feldschlösschen indeed. Not much lacework. Unpleasant finish.

Appearance: Light golden. Very little head. Quite fizzy. Aroma: Not much. Bit of malt and hops, I guess. Taste: Some malt and hops. Quite boring. Info: 330ml bottle, 7/8-2007

Shep’s bottle. Gold colour. Quite a foxy malt aroma. Taste has some malt, biscuit and a pleasant citric tang. Not very bitter, but it has a bit more character than most pale lagers.

Appearance: copper color. Golden color. Medium head, white color and not lasting. Aroma: malty; light herbal touch and some metallic from hops. Slight citric-fruitiness reminiscence like grapefruits. Flavor: light and ephemeral sweet start from pale malts. Citric touch with reminiscences of peel lemon and grapefruits. Slight dry-hoopyness from hops, some resinous with metallic note and not lasting. Palate: light body and medium carbonated. Mediocre, but refreshing for a summer’s day.

Keg at the Globe Inn, Hythe, Kent. Straw colour with a thin ring of white head, but highly carbonated with big bubbles; a fresh aroma of grassy hops; crisp with sweetish malt flavours balanced by a sharp bitterness, quite prickly mouth feel. In the end the sweetness wins over the bitterness leaving an unsatisfactory finish. It’s hard to place the style, it’s similar to Stella in some ways, and 1664 in others. Not a bad lager, but I would not go out of my way to find it.

UPDATED: MAR 12, 2007 This is a Shepherd Neame beer, which is always good. It’s pretty nice, not as strong as the reputation that proceeds it: I find it quite refreshing. Yellow amber in colour (like Stella), slightly hoppy - I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a love child of Oranjeboom and Stella actually. What do you reckon?
