It is brewed with both juniper twigs and a large dose of Finnish attitude. It is available on tap an in bottles in bars and restaurants across Finland. The beer has also featured among the seasonal Christmas beers at Alko, the Finnish monopoly retail distributor of beers with more than 4.7% Alc. 50 cl, bottled. Pours cloudy red with a tiny white head. Aroma: Root cellar. Potato sack. Vegetables and herbs, hints of juniper. Nice. Tobacco. Nuts. Coffee and dark chocolate. Taste: Roasted malt. Nutty. Some sweetness, sensible coffee like bitterness. Palate: Medium bodied, a bit thin, oily, too. The aftertaste is almost exactly like in nut butter. Very interesting one.

Bottle ordered at CKDC. Date on bottle is March of ’08 and sampled today. Deep mahogany colour with a late-forming 1-finger beige head. The nose is similar to what you might expect from an English barleywine. British noble hops, vinous malts, brown sugar, juniper (duh), dried dark pitted fruits, and mild cocoa impressions. A bit more of the cocoa and brown sugary sweetness are apparent upon the first sip. Grassy and herbal hop notes, tobacco, juniper and figs/dates/dried dark fruit. The palate could be a little fuller, IMO, though the duration is long. I’m glad to have sampled this tasty brew. Kudos to Huvila and CKDC!

Bottle at RBESG 2011 Grand Tasting at The Dean Swift, London. Pours a clearish ruby with a bubbly head. Mild fruit nose, some malts. Sweet flavor with ripe and dry fruits, also some brown sugar. Delicious. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Mild warming finish, toast, more brown sugar, light fruits. As I said, delicious.

(50cl bottle thanks to Mora2000) clear gold-orange with a ring of fine tan bubbles. Nose of nuts, brown sugar, and rich. Taste of brown sugar, toasty caramel, raw sweet grains, mild oxidation but welcome in this case, and a great palate linger.

Thanks to TurdFurgison for picking up this bottle in Chicago at West Lakeview for me. Served in a Val-Dieu chalice. Poured a fairly-dart brown with a thin light tan head that receded quickly without leaving too much lacing. The nose carried a bit of juniper and darker malts, plus a faint herbal quality. Flavor has a touch of roast and some darkened malt plus juniper and miscellaneous spicing. Not over the top in any direction. Light-medium body with good carbonation and a semi-dry finish. Pretty nice brew.

500ml bottle, from GMCC2181. Rating #104. Hazy dark brown and very dense with a dirty white head. Real nice aroma, light, faded hops, rich sweet malts, dark fruits and berries, I could smell this one all day. Flavor is pretty sharp, light oxidation, plums and maybe a little apricot, pretty nice beer. (1885)
