COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Huvila Arctic Circle Ale is a chestnut coloured ale with a malty/fruity odour. It tastes of dark fruits and caramel malts and finishes off with a nice bitter hop tail. It is brewed with both juniper twigs and a large dose of Finnish attitude. It is available on tap an in bottles in bars and restaurants across Finland. The beer has also featured among the seasonal Christmas beers at Alko, the Finnish monopoly retail distributor of beers with more than 4.7% Alc. Arctic Circle Ale is also imported into the US through Shelton Brothers.

deep dark ambre brown colour, slightly hazy liquid, pours a thin layer of creamy sleek tanned foam. aromascape is full of fruit/grape aromas and vegebatle-like tones, accompanied by wood and smoke. a malty with rye, hoppy aroma makes the experience pretty wide but still light. the taste is dark sweet with light bitterness and sourness, very balanced and light without losing character. the body is light, juicy, and dry. this work well with the overall character, but does not really deepen the experience or add anything. one of my favourites from huvila.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2013 500 ml. Deep mahogany with a ring of bubbles. Nose of maple syrup, dates, dark cherries; slight toasted grain, herbal and alcohol notes, The taste is deliciously the same, with some additional tones of chocolate, evergreen resin, and oak. Medium-heavy body is just thin enough, has low carbonation, and is full of malt but well-dried by the juniper. Very unique, drinkable and tasty brew.

500mL bottle purchased from the Davis Beer Shoppe. The label is quite a bit different than this photo. The aroma on this is super floral. Lots of flower petals. Pretty spicy nose, too. Light caramel sweetness. Light smokiness. Scantly hazy light amber body with a smallish manilla head. Leaves ok lacing. Starts with a good deal of chewy sweet caramel maltiness. Becomes a little spicy in the middle with herbal notes. The juniper comes through a bit in the end, with a light bitterness that is warming. This is very undercarbonated and fairly sweet, which makes we wonder about the attenuation. It’s an interesting brew, that’s for sure.

16.9 oz. bottle. Pours a lightly hazed dark brown that is still transparent with a thin off-white head that is gone by the second sip and leaves no lace. Pleasant aroma of toffee with a few notes of juniper. The flavor is heavily laden with toffee that is mildly oxidized, malt and just a bit of juniper. Moderate bitterness at the finish.

50 cl, bottled. Pours cloudy red with a tiny white head. Aroma: Root cellar. Potato sack. Vegetables and herbs, hints of juniper. Nice. Tobacco. Nuts. Coffee and dark chocolate. Taste: Roasted malt. Nutty. Some sweetness, sensible coffee like bitterness. Palate: Medium bodied, a bit thin, oily, too. The aftertaste is almost exactly like in nut butter. Very interesting one.

Bottle ordered at CKDC. Date on bottle is March of ’08 and sampled today. Deep mahogany colour with a late-forming 1-finger beige head. The nose is similar to what you might expect from an English barleywine. British noble hops, vinous malts, brown sugar, juniper (duh), dried dark pitted fruits, and mild cocoa impressions. A bit more of the cocoa and brown sugary sweetness are apparent upon the first sip. Grassy and herbal hop notes, tobacco, juniper and figs/dates/dried dark fruit. The palate could be a little fuller, IMO, though the duration is long. I’m glad to have sampled this tasty brew. Kudos to Huvila and CKDC!
