Huvila Arctic Circle Ale is a chestnut coloured ale with a malty/fruity odour. It tastes of dark fruits and caramel malts and finishes off with a nice bitter hop tail. It is brewed with both juniper twigs and a large dose of Finnish attitude. It is available on tap an in bottles in bars and restaurants across Finland. The beer has also featured among the seasonal Christmas beers at Alko, the Finnish monopoly retail distributor of beers with more than 4.7% Alc. Arctic Circle Ale is also imported into the US through Shelton Brothers.

500 ml bottle. Deep dark ruby brown colour, decent light beige head. Aroma of sweet dark fruits, caramel malts and a hint of rye. The flavour is not quite as sweet, more roasted, malty, with dried fruits and a nicely lingering bitter finish. Medium to full-bodied, softly carbonated.

Bottle. Pours with a large off-white to tan head over a hazy bronze body. Aromas of molasses, cola, brown sugar, earth, leather, toffee, juniper, and wood. Very malty and earthy. Flavors of earth, dirt, smoke, bacon, wood, juniper, and tobacco. Light cedar and vegital qualities. Creamy bubbles. Odd beer.

Bottle at Brian’s 30th shindig. Dark brown pour with a cream colored head and big lacing. Aroma is caramel, a little booze, distinct juniper lingering in the background. Taste is more complex: caramel malt, earthy hops, rye, juniper, some light wood. An extremely interesting brew, and one I’d probably like to try again on a more sober evening.

500 ml bottle labeled as Malmgård Arctic Circle Ale. BBE 1.9.2010.
Pours a reddish brown colour with a creamy, beige, lacy head. Aroma of dark fruits, juniper and hops. Flavour of aromatic hops with some bite, mild caramel malts and some barnyard notes. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel. Dry bitter finish. Kudos for the cool label on the bottle.

Before I open this bottle, first I’d like to say I love Sahti. This bottle does not claim to be Sahti, but it is brewed in Finalnd using typical Sahti ingredients, with the probable exception of the yeast. I’m trying not to expect a Sahti when I open this, but I’m not going to be able to completely separate my evaluation from comparisons to Sahti. Rich malt aroma. Some caramel aromas mixed with plums. Not smelling any juniper. Fairly clear red/brown color. Spicy malt flavor. Definitely tasting the dark rye. The juniper is subdued during the sip, but as time goes by the other flavors fade away and the juniper starts to present itself as a lingering flavor that was not tasted during the sip. Nice body, easy drinking. This is not a Sahti. Very little in common flavor-wise so I won’t compare. On its own it is a nice easy drinking beer with a refreshing floral aftertaste.

5/06/2010: Huvila Arctic Circle Ale... Aroma: Nicely caramelized European-like maltiness; hint of spruce. Appearance: Brown color; frothy ivory crown/head. Flavor: Substantial malty base paried with notes of bark and juniper berries; floral hops; caramel; refreshing dry and clean finish. Palate: Medium to medium-full body; smooth and mellow. Overall: Interesting and unique; very good; reminds me of Sahti.

Bottle shared by ShareANevada. Poured hazy brown with an average frothy brown head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate to heavy dark fruit and juniper aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy spice and dark fruit sweet flavor with a medium to heavy spice sweet finish of moderated to long duration. Refreshing complex standout beer.

This brew is a copper-brown color with a medium light tan head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing at the top with spots underneath. Aroma of caramel malt, berries and hops. Medium body with flavors of burnt malt, hops, and fruit. The juniper character is fleetingly present too. The finish is woody and malty with a sweet aftertaste. Above average overall.

Different than I expected and much different than another juniper beer I’ve had. This one reminds me of a softer easier chewy porter or stout. Poured with a fine light tan head that settles down to a thin cover and some lace. Color is a a cloudy brown with dark amber highlights. Aroma is very malty with hints of rye fruit roasty and the juniper. Flavor is the same but with lots more going on. Roast comes out more. Very well balanced. Texture is like I said, chewy and full with great carbonation. Nice finish. Session.
