Huvila Arctic Circle Ale is a chestnut coloured ale with a malty/fruity odour. It tastes of dark fruits and caramel malts and finishes off with a nice bitter hop tail. It is brewed with both juniper twigs and a large dose of Finnish attitude. It is available on tap an in bottles in bars and restaurants across Finland. The beer has also featured among the seasonal Christmas beers at Alko, the Finnish monopoly retail distributor of beers with more than 4.7% Alc. Arctic Circle Ale is also imported into the US through Shelton Brothers.

Slightly hazy, nut-brown colour. Managed to get a rich, three-finger off-white to tan coloured head in my lager glass, by a rigorous pour. Sweet aroma immediately present, even 30 cm away from my nose, dark fruits and alcohol up front. Taste is bitter, dark fruits and caramel sweetness at the same time. And it’s very clear that this is NOT going to get a high rating from me. This is not my kind of beer. Sorry, I didn’t like it.

Aromat: dość skromny - karmel plus owoce, głównie śliwki. alkoholu niewiele.

Wygląd: jasno rubinowa barwa, zamglona. Piana w kolorze ecru, średniej wielkości i umiarkowanie trwała.

Smak: karmel, śliwki, rodzynki, czekolada, herbatniki. Goryczka w okolicach średniej, z pewnością niższa niż sugerowana. Średnia do krągłej pełnia, niskie do umiarkowanego wysycenie i owocowa oraz alkoholowa końcówka.

Nearly no head, but it does leave some streaky, but limited, lace. The beer is a solid brown color where light passes through easily. Very cloudy, looks muddy. Plentiful sweet caramel. Smells like a rich duppelbock or a barley wine. No notable juniper berry aroma. Drier than the smell lets on, but still very sweet. There’s some nice balancing toastiness to the swallow. The aftertaste is surprisingly astringent like Gin with a mild kick of alcohol kicked in. Wonderfully different and remarkably drinkable. Full bodied with a low level of carbonation.

Hopfiger, etwas scharf malziger Antrunk. Milde, zum Mittelteil steigende Kräuternoten, gefolgt von Kaffenuancen. Malzbetoner Nachgeschmack, rund, stimmig. 10/9/10/10/12/10

This ale is brewed with juniper and have a beautifully renewable foam. It has the characteristics of an amber ale with dark caramel malt in the main theme embossed with a slightly spicy tang of juniper. Let the sweetness of malt and a rapidly growing spicy bitterness where juniper is very evident. At the end comes a somewhat distinctive bitter end as probably not be attributed solely to the hops, but surely also juniper vessel profits. Lovely and delicate ale which can be recommended.

Bottle (500 ml). Split 2-ways.

Appearance: Cloudy reddish-brow with a medium quickly diminishing beige head and little lacing.

Aroma: Rye spiciness with dark fruits, caramel, earthy notes, brown sugar and herbal notes.

Taste: Moderate sweetness with medium to heavy spiciness, rye, dark fruits, brown sugar, caramel, herbal notes, earthy notes and medium bitterness.

Palate: Medium body. Moderate carbonation. A bit syrupy. Spicy finish. Herbal, earthy and spicy finish.

Overall: It’s not bad and it’s not too sweet but the rye and spices takes quite a lot of place so the balance isn’t so good. Nice berry touch.

0,5 l bottle from MC Kiosk in Bonn, best before 21/1/2016. Clear, deep red with a massive, foamy, stable and tan head. Pleasant, fruity-malty aroma of coffee, dark chocolate, juniper, redcurrant and raisins. Sweetish-fruity taste of redcurrant, mushrooms and juniper with hints of dark chocolate and coffee. Short, slightly bitter finish with lots of juniper. Medium body, slightly creamy texture, average carbonation. Very interesting stuff but not totally convincing. The juniper is a bit too dominant so that the beer is somewhat unbalanced.
