Huvila Arctic Circle Ale is a chestnut coloured ale with a malty/fruity odour. It tastes of dark fruits and caramel malts and finishes off with a nice bitter hop tail. It is brewed with both juniper twigs and a large dose of Finnish attitude. It is available on tap an in bottles in bars and restaurants across Finland. The beer has also featured among the seasonal Christmas beers at Alko, the Finnish monopoly retail distributor of beers with more than 4.7% Alc. Arctic Circle Ale is also imported into the US through Shelton Brothers.

500ml bottle from LCBO. Hazy reddish amber with a fairly large long-lasting fizzy-foamy beige head. Interesting aroma - definite alcohol presence, cocoa/coffee malt, very bitter - I definitely get the juniper; but the aroma is more malty than bitter. The taste follows, but the juniper dominates - nice, if a little assertive. Lightish body, slick, very astringent, mildly carbonated - fairly long sharp herbal-juniper finish - the malt loses out pretty early on. I liked it, but it’s a weird one.

Cloudy dark brown color, average sized off white head. Aroma of caramel, nuts, chocolate, malt, sugar and some herby touches. All in all, very nice. Taste was, however, a major letdown. Dark fruits are most obvious, than some caramel, nuts, herbs and alcohol. It doesn’t sound bad, except for alcohol presence, but its kinda mild and without any real character. Medium body, soft carbonation. Mainly sweet taste, but with somewhat strong bitter finish. Aroma is great, and it’s very much drinkable, but it could’ve been awesome.

Big notes of slightly roasted, nutty brown sugar, with some subtle hops, and some pine. The finish is quit bitter with alot of herbs, grasses and the juniper comes around. Interesting.

Bottle purchased at LCBO in Toronto. Pours deep ruby with thick white head. Mild aroma of juniper, mint and molasses. Tastes of the same along with hops. I guess this isn’t what sahti tastes like?

500 ml bottle from LCBO, served cool in a tulip glass.

App.: Deep, murky mahogany with a full, light tan head. Aroma: Quite malty with a bit of chlorophenol, berry-like fruitiness, quite sweet-smelling and malt-forward, caramel too, not getting the botanicals. Palate: Medium+ body and fairly full carbonation. Flav.: Very malty with plenty of berry-like fruitiness, faint roasted notes, caramel/toffee, light butterscotch, still not getting the juniper (or other botanical notes); basically dry with pretty good bitterness and a long, malty, vaguely boozy finish with light to moderate pine/resin/juniper?.

Not a bad beer. Not as expected. Not a bad thing. Not again.

Pours hazy copper thin tan head large bubbles. Aroma is sweet caramel with bready notes. Flavor is sweet bready rich malt. Woody finish light bitterness that’s a little odd, subtle juniper gin like flavor.
