Huvila Arctic Circle Ale is a chestnut coloured ale with a malty/fruity odour. It tastes of dark fruits and caramel malts and finishes off with a nice bitter hop tail. It is brewed with both juniper twigs and a large dose of Finnish attitude. It is available on tap an in bottles in bars and restaurants across Finland. The beer has also featured among the seasonal Christmas beers at Alko, the Finnish monopoly retail distributor of beers with more than 4.7% Alc. Arctic Circle Ale is also imported into the US through Shelton Brothers.

50 cl bottle graciously given to me by beastiefan2k. Pour is a cloudy brown ruby with nice settling building up a dense 3 inch tan head. Head falls slowly with minimal lacing. Aroma is sweet fig, cocoa malt and lively juniper earthiness. Interesting nose, soft and fresh. Taste is more skewed to juniper and wood, with the grassy somewhat sweet fig behind that. There is a real nice straw element in the finish which finishes crisp and dry. As it warms, I get some of the cocoa from the nose in the taste. More like dry baking cocoa. Palate is medium bodied, with a fair amount of carbonation. There is a warming alcohol sensation to the finish which comes across a bit odd with the dryness. Overall an interesting complex beer, thanks for giving me this Eugene.

Bottle. Dark brown, small and fully diminishing head. Moderate and very spicy and herbal aroma with juniper, some sweetness. Body is medium, malty and dryish, herbal spiciness with juniper. Finish is average, malty, juniper with soapy hoppyness. Juniper just does not work with this hoppyness – it gets too overwhelming.

Bottle at Dans courtesy of Aaron, thanks man! Poured a deep, clear, brown with a red tint. Smell is big red licorice, dark fruit, sweet malt, and caramel. Taste is earthy, dark fruits, caramel, candi sugar, and a light bitterness on the finish. Very interesting and a lot going on, quite different. Mouthfeel is thin, with medium carbonation. Overall, a pretty cool beer.

taster on tap @ Ei8ht Ball / Bellevue KY --- Clear amber brown with a rim head, no lace. Taste is roasted malt with smooth bittering that enters late in the palate. Both sides finish on equal footing, making for a balanced, clean, sessionable brew. Good stuff.

Dark brown of color with a nice beige head. An aroma of wood, pine, heather, honey and juniper. A flavor of caramel, toffee, juniper, heather and wood.

0.5l bottle. This is a clear deep ruby one with a small quickly bubbly and lacing off-white top. On the nose I get a strong slightly burned caramel sweetness blended with sweet sticky red fruits. There is something undefined in here that I have a hard time pinpointing. Will keep it in mind while I’m drinking. Above average carbonated with a light oily mouthfeel. As expected it’s on the sweet and malty side of the scale this. Kinda herbal. Wait, I think that might have been the unidentified aroma that I could not describe was. Yeah, it’s kinda herbal and almost heathery. Nuts and more sweet caramel finishes this one off. Not sure what I think of it. Made me use the old brain for a second, but other than that this won’t be a beer I will use any more time on. Well, except when I’ll be posting it on ratebeer that is of course. And perhaps I will mention it to some of my friends at some point. I most likely have to remove it from my inventory as well, and I’ll be trying to dodge it when I see it on the shelf’s. Hmm.. This took up more of my time than I think it’s worth! 08.02.2013

500 ml bottle from LCBO, served cool in a tulip glass.

App.: Deep, murky mahogany with a full, light tan head. Aroma: Quite malty with a bit of chlorophenol, berry-like fruitiness, quite sweet-smelling and malt-forward, caramel too, not getting the botanicals. Palate: Medium+ body and fairly full carbonation. Flav.: Very malty with plenty of berry-like fruitiness, faint roasted notes, caramel/toffee, light butterscotch, still not getting the juniper (or other botanical notes); basically dry with pretty good bitterness and a long, malty, vaguely boozy finish with light to moderate pine/resin/juniper?.

Not a bad beer. Not as expected. Not a bad thing. Not again.

5/06/2010: Huvila Arctic Circle Ale... Aroma: Nicely caramelized European-like maltiness; hint of spruce. Appearance: Brown color; frothy ivory crown/head. Flavor: Substantial malty base paried with notes of bark and juniper berries; floral hops; caramel; refreshing dry and clean finish. Palate: Medium to medium-full body; smooth and mellow. Overall: Interesting and unique; very good; reminds me of Sahti.

50 cl bottle (7.3% Alc./Vol.) shared by shareanevada [BA]. Thanks Ben! Rating #55 for this beer.

500mL bottle purchased from the Davis Beer Shoppe. The label is quite a bit different than this photo. The aroma on this is super floral. Lots of flower petals. Pretty spicy nose, too. Light caramel sweetness. Light smokiness. Scantly hazy light amber body with a smallish manilla head. Leaves ok lacing. Starts with a good deal of chewy sweet caramel maltiness. Becomes a little spicy in the middle with herbal notes. The juniper comes through a bit in the end, with a light bitterness that is warming. This is very undercarbonated and fairly sweet, which makes we wonder about the attenuation. It’s an interesting brew, that’s for sure.

16.9 oz. bottle. Pours a lightly hazed dark brown that is still transparent with a thin off-white head that is gone by the second sip and leaves no lace. Pleasant aroma of toffee with a few notes of juniper. The flavor is heavily laden with toffee that is mildly oxidized, malt and just a bit of juniper. Moderate bitterness at the finish.
