3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
[Bottle, thanks CaptainCougar!] Pours reddish-amber with a beige head. Odd aroma, juniper, some sweet fruitiness, yeast, very bready. Taste has some decent bitterness with a lot of yeast, some identifiable notes that I will attribute to the juniper, and a good deal of malt on the finish. Good mouthfeel with a long finish. Not a bad beer, and very unique.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pour is very deep dark brown with a medium white head. Aroma is toffee malt, brandy, dried fruits, dark berries, and lightly spicy. aroma is similar to an old ale, but maybe just a bit brighter. Flavor is a bit odd up front. Alternates between sweet malt and a bitter crab-apple-like flavor. Simultaneously sweet and bitter. The sweetness begins to wane in the middle where the dry berry/ apple flavor begins to take over. Finish is very dry and bitter; not acrid though. Like the bitter flavor of tree bark (if you have ever spent time in the woods camping/ hunting/ or whatever, and put a small twig in your mouth to chew on; that’s the flavor). It’s woody, but not like a barrel. Actually very pleasant stuff, not boring for sure. Guess I should have bought more when I had the chance.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sweet, malty and spicy with a tinge of juniper. I really like juniper and Sahti, so I just wish that there was a stronger juniper character if anything. The beer pours a purplish brown, translucent but quite dark, with a creamy off-white head. The aroma is spicy and malty with notes of hops and juniper. It’s more along the lines of an English Strong Ale with a bit of holiday spice. The malt has a really nice flavor, like a good barleywine. There are fruit notes, raspberries and plums, mixed with brown sugar and rum. The juniper is light and woody. The hops (or maybe it’s just bitterness from the juniper twigs) are relatively strong. There’s a fair bite in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is full and round. A very enjoyable little nightcap.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
7.3% bottle from Drink Shop in Tallinn, just 4 euros so cheaper than in Finland! Beautiful mellow brown color, light bige head of luscious foam. Sweet malt aroma with possibly a touch of smoke. The flavor is definitely peated malts but pretty well balanced. Peat smoke, then sweet caramel malts with a mild bitter finish. Great stuff. You don’t taste the high ABV at all. Huvila/ is probably the best Finnish brewery I tried. This is a really good beer which is growing on me from good to great.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: OCT 8, 2009 1 pt. .9 oz bottle (from Liquid Solutions) served in shaker- poured a non transparent black when held to a light source with shades of dark brown, no carbonation, aroma of malt, 24hr pot coffee aroma (trust me, there is a difference), and bones. Hits the mouth with a very high medium body, the malt is just too overpowering, omg, OMG.... (shakes his head and says, "I GOT THIS"). Malt is on the high end when the soul of the brew comes out to play, hard in the middle, but still puts up a fight, finish lingers badly, and in the bad way, slapnuts. No heady words here, just that it could have been better. I picture me in a long forgotten rest way cabin, and I dreampt (sp? )I found this brew. Yeah, dream. Dream what could have been too little, too late for late for me...

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500 ml bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown with about a half inch tan head that sticks around a little while. There’s also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is rich and malty, the brew smells like caramel malt, dark bread, herbs, and some dark fruit. The herbal and caramel flavors are strong in this brew. It also tastes like nuts, dark bread, and some dark fruit. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it’s syrupy and slick with low/moderate carbonation. I think this is a good brew, I liked it! $8.99 a bottle, I think it’s worth trying at that price.

Lots of orange peel as well as rye malts and sweet rye bread, tones of gingerbread. Taste is filled with christmas spices as well. Sweet rye malts and bread. Surprisingly dry and hoppy finish and aftertaste with tones of juniper as well. Palate is rather light with some carbonation. Fortunately not watery.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Brown with off-white head. Aroma is sweet with a light sour cellulose thing to it. Otherwise notes of almonds, marzipan, malt, yeast, leather. Vinous. Taste is a bit watery at first but some alcohol sweetness kicks in. Notes of burnt caramel, plums, toffee, spices. Ends bitter. Interesting stuff that I need to try again.
