Bottle from LCBO. Caramel and spice aroma. Sweet caramel taste with tons of spice, and a dry finish. Sticky body. Very good.

THOUGHTS: It reminded me a little of and ale version of Samichlaus. Very nice. A little like Mad Elf, too. It was one of those great beers that I can’t fully explain the reasons why I like it. It was like fruit juice, liquor and beer mixed together. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, light to medium reddish cola with an average to large, tan head that mostly diminished, but kept a nice sheet and left good lacing. The aroma was moderate, dark bread, caramel and wood, some spicy yeast; berries, cola, a little vanilla, hint of smoke, and a fruitiness that must have been the juniper. The initial flavor was rather sweet; while the finish was sweet and bitter with a long duration. There was fruit, malty caramel, dark bread, toasted malt, a little smoke, slight whiskey and port, a little cola, hints of chocolate, toffee and a hint of hops. It almost seemed like with was barrel-aged. The medium body was sort of creamy yet oily, too; and it got a little syrupy sticky by the end with soft carbonation and a lightly dry and slightly alcoholic finish.

Bottle. Hazy dark amber body. Small head with fine bubbles. Sweet hoppy aroma. Taste has toffee, caramel and plenty of hops. Juniper is not that evident. Or maybe it is, but it’s lost in the bitterness. Juniper also has a piney/herbal quality and I would have liked to taste more of that.

Bottle at home. Has a hazy reddish brown colour with a beige medium head. Aroma of berries, leather, dried fruit, chocolate, rye bread and caramel. Sweet flavour with more caramel and berries. Nice. Slick mouth feel, and has a light bitterness. A balanced and great beer. Easy drinking as well.

Now and then I like to test my tasting capabilities, so I had this without knowing what kind of beer it is, a fun experiment! The body is very dark brown with a long-lived, light brown head leaving a good deal of lacing. The strong aroma initially feels mainly malty, with roasted notes and mild coffee, so at first I thought this is a porter, maybe a stout. After a short while more hops come creeping in, with fruits and berries, and soon it feels more like a malty BIPA. Then an exciting turn: I get lots of pine needles and juniper, and these notes just keep increasing. The flavours are strong with dominant hoppy notes and lots and lots of resin, pine needles and spicy juniper. It didn’t come as a surprise when I learned that the Arctic Circle is brewed with juniper twigs! The roasted malty notes and coffee are in the back. The taste is moderate sweet and the fairly long-lasting finish is quite heavy bitter. Medium body, oily texture with a dry finish, soft carbonation. A very interesting, complex and tasty beer.

{thoughts} Slight unfocused and astringent, thinly textured; firmer malts might pull this beer together, eliminating its vacillating nature.

{elements} Brilliant, deep maroon hue; light tan froth quickly recedes into a scattering of suds. Aroma is erratic --toasty with light toffee blending into a dusty and lightly musky plum element with piny and licorice accents. Spicy upfront with a moderate sweetness tucked away, fruity and berry-like acidity; finishes like fruit punch. Light green tea astringency, watery texture, moderate carbonation, medium body. 50 cl bottle, best before 01.09.2012.

Big time juniper aroma tempered with some other floral hop notes, it comes on like a well balanced gin. It pours a dark clear brown with a thin fizzy coating of a head. Settling into the glass, some more malty and caramel sugar aromas come out, hinting at a well balanced sweetness tempered hopefully by the bitter juniper. It comes close to that, coming into with a more toffee like maltiness with the bitterness not harsh but present like cold coffee.

Bottle. Pour is very deep dark brown with a medium white head. Aroma is toffee malt, brandy, dried fruits, dark berries, and lightly spicy. aroma is similar to an old ale, but maybe just a bit brighter. Flavor is a bit odd up front. Alternates between sweet malt and a bitter crab-apple-like flavor. Simultaneously sweet and bitter. The sweetness begins to wane in the middle where the dry berry/ apple flavor begins to take over. Finish is very dry and bitter; not acrid though. Like the bitter flavor of tree bark (if you have ever spent time in the woods camping/ hunting/ or whatever, and put a small twig in your mouth to chew on; that’s the flavor). It’s woody, but not like a barrel. Actually very pleasant stuff, not boring for sure. Guess I should have bought more when I had the chance.

(Bottle). A peculiar beer that I find difficult to describe with words. Most prominent, however, is a sweet fruitiness mixed with spices ... Strange!
