Huvila Arctic Circle Ale is a chestnut coloured ale with a malty/fruity odour. It tastes of dark fruits and caramel malts and finishes off with a nice bitter hop tail. It is brewed with both juniper twigs and a large dose of Finnish attitude. It is available on tap an in bottles in bars and restaurants across Finland. The beer has also featured among the seasonal Christmas beers at Alko, the Finnish monopoly retail distributor of beers with more than 4.7% Alc. Arctic Circle Ale is also imported into the US through Shelton Brothers.

Bottle. Very dark amber body, clear ruby against the light. Aroma has dark fruits, almost dried fruits, such as raisins. Toffee, candi sugar syrup, but well balanced. Light touch of alcohol. Weak woody in the background. Taste has medium caramel sweetness, medium earthy bitterness, little bit harsh in the after taste. Body is full to medium, medium carbonation, light oily texture.

500 ml bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown with about a half inch tan head that sticks around a little while. There’s also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is rich and malty, the brew smells like caramel malt, dark bread, herbs, and some dark fruit. The herbal and caramel flavors are strong in this brew. It also tastes like nuts, dark bread, and some dark fruit. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it’s syrupy and slick with low/moderate carbonation. I think this is a good brew, I liked it! $8.99 a bottle, I think it’s worth trying at that price.

Bottle. Hazy dark amber body. Small head with fine bubbles. Sweet hoppy aroma. Taste has toffee, caramel and plenty of hops. Juniper is not that evident. Or maybe it is, but it’s lost in the bitterness. Juniper also has a piney/herbal quality and I would have liked to taste more of that.

Now and then I like to test my tasting capabilities, so I had this without knowing what kind of beer it is, a fun experiment! The body is very dark brown with a long-lived, light brown head leaving a good deal of lacing. The strong aroma initially feels mainly malty, with roasted notes and mild coffee, so at first I thought this is a porter, maybe a stout. After a short while more hops come creeping in, with fruits and berries, and soon it feels more like a malty BIPA. Then an exciting turn: I get lots of pine needles and juniper, and these notes just keep increasing. The flavours are strong with dominant hoppy notes and lots and lots of resin, pine needles and spicy juniper. It didn’t come as a surprise when I learned that the Arctic Circle is brewed with juniper twigs! The roasted malty notes and coffee are in the back. The taste is moderate sweet and the fairly long-lasting finish is quite heavy bitter. Medium body, oily texture with a dry finish, soft carbonation. A very interesting, complex and tasty beer.

Bottle. Pours dark amber with an airy head. Aroma is roasted malts and grain, with kandi, juniper and anise. Oily body with soft carbonation. Flavour is sourish malts with juniper, anise, burned wood and camphor, as well as woody notes of old tree roots. Disappointing.
