Rastacouere (6042) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 8, 2010
This black ale wears a beige sheet that never departs while launching strong cakey aromas. Pretty much epitomizes a chocolatey stout, this is rich with chocolate cake fudgeyness and fortunately well focused so its relative simplicity is no hindrance. I can’t perceive any trace of fruitiness, nor much hop character at all. If anything, it’s its... consolidated alcohol which has a considerable presence besides the chocolate. Its 9% is certainly felt despite the global smoothness, though it never becomes exagerated. Very sweet in mouth, reminiscent of honeyed covered bread, chewy at that. Somehow, its velvety mouthfeel cushions the mouth gently as its carbonation mostly resumes to a smooth foaminess and the effect of this dance is a sense of balance. A fortunate turn of events as I’m not that big a sucker for sweetness in my beers. No edges in this soft finish, tame roast bitterness never even challenges the desserty sweetness. Chocolate Indulgence... heard that somewhere?

Bottle at the legend of Chriso’s pre GBBF09 Tasting. Alround rating: Sweet chocolate malt and sweet chocolate, quite balanced and sweet and what i like in a dark beer.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2009 (Bottled) Very dark brown with a smallish, light brown head. Licorice-malty, sweetish aroma with a touch of milky sourness and alcohol. Sourish-malty, starchy and slightly vegetably flavor with licorice and chocolatey sweetness. Alcohol is better hidden than in the aroma. Medium to full body, sticky-syrupy mouthfeel, low carbonation. Quite sweet and somewhat unclean Imperial Stout. Hopefully it gets better with ageing. Was good with sweet chocolate cake, but not so much with drier 70% chocolate. (Draught@St.Urho) Almost black with a very small head. Surprisingly mild aroma with some sourness, some sweetish malt, and hints of licorice. Sweetish-malty, licoricey flavor with dark coffee and hints of sourness. Slicky-sweet, medium to full-bodied,low-carbonated palate. Interesting and smooth, but too sweet to be balanced. More like barley wine than imperial stout. Fortunately, it works better with a chocolate cake - although it shows a little alcohol then.

Bottled at Helsinki Beer Festival 2008. Almost black color with small head. The aroma and flavor is sweet and roasty with chocolate, coffee, leather, licorice, charcoal and some sharp alcohol. Pairs well with dark chocolate offered with the beer.

Bottle. Almost black with a medium beige head. Rich chocolate and roasted coffee aroma. Flavours are quite sweet, less roastedness, more sour-milky chocolate. Dangerously good as the alcohol is well-hidden.

330 ml bottle. Rated @ 22.3.2009.
Pours a black colour with a beige head. Aroma of chocolate, sweet malts and caramel. Flavour of sweet malts, mild coffee, licorice and (unfortunately) vegetables. Medium bodied with oily mouthfeel. This could’ve been something great.

laiti (3925) - Tampere, FINLAND - NOV 25, 2011
33 cl bottle @ home, BBE 2013
Sweetish aroma has roasted malt, some metal and hints of cocoa powder. Flavour is somewhat tart and acidic with some roasted malt, cocoa and lactic acid. Dry and tart finish. Rather oily palate. The sweetness does not disturb like it did two years ago, but the acidic tartness does disturb a bit. Most likely this was a bad bottle.

Bottle at 4:20 at RBESG Rome. Black colour, beige head. Aroma is very sweet, soy, ripe fruits, light tart roasted maltiness. Flavour is very fruity, strawberry, sweet, raspberries, vanilla, sugar, sweet sugary light coffee bitter finish. Medium to fullbodied. Way too sweet imo.
