The Huvila X-Porter has a deep black appearance with a brown head. Creamy, slightly nutty, smooth chocolate malt nose. The taste is similar to its nose but also allows the taste of toffee to come through. The after taste then turns more chocolate with toffee. This is a rarity as not many top-fermented Baltic Porters are made any more. Our “hero” at the San Diego Int’l Beer Festival 2010! It is available on tap and in bottles in bars and restaurants across Finland. Since 2011, Huvila X-Porter is also available in shops in Estonia through Drink Baar. Last, but not least, Huvila X-Porter is also imported into the US through Shelton Brothers.

(50 cl bottle from Bunker Beer; BBD: August 2nd 2014) Pours black with huge, chocolate milk-coloured head. The head collapses after a while leaving something floating in the centre. The lace is nice. As I’ve recently found with many beers it’s possible to reinvigorate the head by circulating the beverage in the glass. Aroma is subdued roasted malt with a nutty impression and a hint of smoke. Mouthfeel is somewhere between oily and creamy, soft carbonation, medium body with a roasted finish. Taste is quite approachable yet also somewhat bland - neither particularly sweet nor bitter, roasted or ascorbic.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Tom C’s place. Thanks Stas. Black-colored with a nice tan head. Aroma of licorice, malt, a bit of fruitiness, chocolate and a bit of roast. Sweetish flavor with some roast, chocolate, a bit of licorice, some fruitiness and a bitterish finish. Medium-bodied.

Tap at St Urho’s Pub, Helsinki. Black with ruby hints. Geometric lacing patterns down the glass. Roasted aroma with lighter vanilla notes. Taste has plenty of liquorice, light berry fruits and a long, sticky tobacco finish. Definitely a solid example of this style.

Dark brown, near black beer, with a beige head. Aroma is chocolate, raisins, dark fruit, light coffee. Taste is more sweet than bitter, with lots of chocolate and dough. Excellent porter.

Bottle @ home. Pours blackish brown with a thick, fluffy beige head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate and coca-cola. Taste is lightly smoked, coffee and licorice. Quite high carbonation makes this one rather light bodied for at porter, which is fine with me. - with thirst, Niklas

bottle @ John’s Grocery / Iowa City IA --- Clear very dark brown color, bubbly head cover that stays awhile, tiny dots of lace. Nice aroma of roasted malt. Taste is roasted caramel malt that adds toffee in the palate before turning more bitter through the appearance of dark chocolate. All moves smoothly to a lingering bitter malt finish. The body is a little watery, but not objectionable. Overall, a nice example of the style.

Tap at St. Urho’s Pub, Helsinki. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy off white head and some broken lace. The aroma is roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate. The flavour is strong bitter with big roasted malt liqourice bitter, light toffee, alcoholic palate and a long bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Tasted a little more alcoholic than it was.

Bottle from Magasin du Nord, Kgs Nytorv, DK. Pours black with huge creamy tan head. Intense aroma of roasted malts pretty much covering all the rest, some dark fruits, maybe some licorice too, hard to say behind the roast. Full bodied with some sweetness in the taste, but mostly bitter especially on aftertaste, borderline astringent. Long bitter finish.

Licorice, tar, deep roast, dark dark chocolate with deep roasted coffee. Not very smooth and quite dry, loads of tar. Not that pleasant and quite unbalanced.
