3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
2003 Vintage from Sam the Beer Man. Bottled opened with little carbonation, poured out into glass with inch cream colored foam that slowly dissipated, leaving only a thin ring around the glass. Appearance is dark mahogany, murky; the color of water from a rusty pipe. The aroma is red sauce (canned tomato paste) and candi sugar, although both are not intense, perhaps because of it’s age. When taken the beverage is warm in the mouth, tasting sweetness from candi, a bit of coriander spice and toasted caramel malt. Aftertaste is dark fruit—cherries noted from the top, and definitely the pit of plum as it washes down. Both alcohol and musty yeast are present in the taste, however for it’s strength that alcohol taste is surprising; the blood-like “must” seems to be common to the Family Huyghe Brouwerij (Delirium Noel). Enjoyed in Goblet.
On a side note, watch out for Boise State Broncos in ’07!

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
33cl bottle @home. BBE 07/16. Deep brown, thick beige head. Brown sugar, spicy, toffeeish aroma, dark fruity notes. Flavor has yeast, cinnamon, dark fruits and loads of sugar. Tickles. Toasted, caramelly finish. High carbonation. Too sweet for my taste.
Edit: actually as the beer warms up a little I start to enjoy the fruity and spicy notes the yeast gives. up two notches from 3.0

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Thx! 33 cl. bottle sampled @ Gollem. Dark brown, little mocha head. Smell is intensely sweet with cough syrup, brown sugar and molasses. Tastes like coca-cola mixed with brown sugar and molasses, very sweet and artificial with a heavy metallic note, gravy and bitter herbs. Syrupy body. Far too metallic and artificial. What did they put into this? It feels like there are a ton of additives and E-numbers in here.

Diep donkerbruine kleur met een stevige beige schuimkraag. Ruikt fruitig, zoet. Smaakt nogal vlak, beetje zuur. Niet lekker.

2.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
330ml bottle bought at Belgian Beer International in Tsuen Wan.
Translucent dark ruby brown colour with lots of brown yeast
sediments; Explosive three finger head with lasting crumpety off-white foam; Excellent sticky lacing and quite fizzy carbonation; Very fragrant and sweet aroma of malt, with banana, light pineapple, vanilla, sweet caramel, plums, sugar, strong Bel yeast, very light phenolic and light spices; Close to light sweet taste of strong dark malt, with metallic, strong tart notes, flashes of alcohol spikes, red fruit notes, caramel, very light toffee, Bel yeast, lime and light bitter grassy hops; Full body, thick and oily palate; Mouth feel is Belgian Dark, quite strong in roasty malt taste and tartness in a very oily body. Surprisingly low sweetness, but has flashes of metallic and booze. Everything else from red fruits, caramel, phenolic, yeast and spices are really light, its overall feel is rather unbalanced. Hmm… Hoppiness is no nose, lime and light grassy hops in taste; Bitterness is typical Bel-ish low-fi for lasting low bitter-malty finish; Slightly dry after taste. Thick, roasty and quite tart to mouth.
Comments: This one has really good looks, lacey heads and some tempting strong dark ale aroma, but its taste is a mishmash of tartness, metallic and booze spikes without any sweetness or Bel yeastiness to save it. What a waste of triple fermentation. Once is enough.

Dark mahogany. Persistent beige head and lacing. Aroma of dried berries, blackcurrants, roasted nuts and dark caramel. Fruity taste reminiscent of boysenberries. Refreshing and well balanced.. Above average carbonation. A hint of sourness in aftertaste.

330 ml bottle. L08. BB 07/16. From belgianbeerfactory.com.
Dark reddish brown colour with a big foamy light tan head.
Spices, dark fruits, tart apple, yeast and malt in the aroma. Interesting. The flavour is tartness, apple, spices, mild sourness, some hops, cinnamon and some caramel sweetness. Quite unbalanced but somewhat interesting flavour.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. 25cL. Home. Matte dark brown beer with a beige non persistant head. Aroma of caramel, spices, sugar, berries, chocolate. Ephemeral sweetness leads to more bitterness and sourness (medium). Oily texture. Carbonated, for sure ! Bitter finish then sour. I like very much this "Grand Cru". After tasting Artevelde, I was a bit disappointed. This one looks like a wine with fruity notes.
