1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20 j12601 (4171) - Poughkeepsie, New York, USA - MAY 12, 2010
On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear yellow with a thin white head. First sign that this probably won’t be good, as any of the maibocks I’ve enjoyed featured a bit darker coloration, and didn’t have fat ugly soda bubbles in them. Skunky grain hits from afar, smells infected, with some sour caramel notes, and buttery aromas. Sweet, and tastes of plastic and vegetables. Some very weird off flavors in here. Tastes like a plastic soda. Very strange bitterness. I tried to think of this as a badly infected sour, but that honestly didn’t help much. I knew after the first whiff that I wouldn’t be able to finish my pint, but so as to not appear rude (and to watch the baseball game) I sat at the bar for about an hour and slowly worked my through about half of this abomination before I just couldn’t take it anymore.

04.23.05 Tap at TAP NY. Terribly pale golden. Foamy. Sweet, lightly tart. Not at all exciting. A bit overdone with some wheat, grass, and mineral flavors; gets tiresome.

TAP NY. Clear pale, white head. Sulfur hop aroma. Pale malty hoppy flavor. Nice body. Hops like a big pils. I like it.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 MartinT (6150) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 29, 2004
Grainy sweetness, almost wheaty, meets a nascent skunk...Feeble acidity tops this odd cat off...Not unpleasant, but there are much better examples...

Mild grainy sweetness - not unappealing. Clear golden, some lacing. Some meaty flavour - slight sweetness. Grainy. Light body. On tap at TapNY festival.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - APR 25, 2004
TAP NY sample. Very light lager-like appearance, light lemony aroma, not a lot of malt. Fairly full bodied, but more grainy and citrusy than anything...tastes more like a pils than a bock to me, perhaps a bit off and sour at the end. Not terrible, but definitely not a success.
