The Barley Wine Style Ale is our most potent ale and is characterized by a rich, malty flavor and is balanced with a heavy hop bitterness. This beer is sweet with a hint of caramel flavor and the high hop bitterness is barely preceivable over the intense malt and alcohol. Barleywines are typically aged for one year before release and will continue to improve for several years. Barley Wine Style Ale is available in bottles.

2010-07-01. Hazy dark orange with creamy small beige head. 3+ Flavour of sweet malt, caramel character that could be on purpose or show signs of oxidation. Light bitterness throughout, very light alcohol. 6+ Modest aroma, light citrus/resin/caramel blend. Overall impression is similar to other West Coast Barleywines and I can never tell if its on purpose or a sign of age, as I am not overly fond of how it comes together. Alcohol grows as it warms. 6+ Smooth average palate. Bottle at Stumbling Monk, Seattle

12 oz. bottle, split with Matts_Property, pours a somewhat hazy mahogany with a small ring of beige head. Aroma of toffee, candied dark fruits (plum, raisin), caramel - not really hinting at much hop character. Flavour of maple syrup, toffee, candied fruits and just enough hop character to balance out the sweetness and prevent it from becoming cloying. Thick, viscous, syrupy palate, with only a slight alcohol burn. A little too syrupy and after a while, a bit cloying. Solid barley wine.

My notes say "aweful", which would seem to imply that this beer if full of awe, or somehow worthy of awe. Sadly, this is not the case, and was simply a misspelling, alas.

Bottle... Cloudy caramel-colored pour with no head. Olfactory highlights include toffee and praline. Medium-bodied with barely sufficient carbonation. The flavor is thin and boring, accompanied by weak notes of lightly sweet toffee and caramel. Watery, mildly sweet finish. Although mundane, I appreciate the opportunity to try this. Nice balance, if nothing else.
