The Barley Wine Style Ale is our most potent ale and is characterized by a rich, malty flavor and is balanced with a heavy hop bitterness. This beer is sweet with a hint of caramel flavor and the high hop bitterness is barely preceivable over the intense malt and alcohol. Barleywines are typically aged for one year before release and will continue to improve for several years. Barley Wine Style Ale is available in bottles.

12 oz. bottle, split with Matts_Property, pours a somewhat hazy mahogany with a small ring of beige head. Aroma of toffee, candied dark fruits (plum, raisin), caramel - not really hinting at much hop character. Flavour of maple syrup, toffee, candied fruits and just enough hop character to balance out the sweetness and prevent it from becoming cloying. Thick, viscous, syrupy palate, with only a slight alcohol burn. A little too syrupy and after a while, a bit cloying. Solid barley wine.

decaturstevoís stevofest part 2. Sample from a bottle thanks to decaturstevo. Clear red, whitish ring. Sweet raisiny caramel aroma. Taste is more of the same but off somehow, plastic

My notes say "aweful", which would seem to imply that this beer if full of awe, or somehow worthy of awe. Sadly, this is not the case, and was simply a misspelling, alas.

This sucks dawg................A murky orange color with a white head. All is well looking at it, its when you smell and taste it that the problems arise. The aroma is musty like an old stanky blanket found in an attic that the dog used to sleep on. Also some oranges and sweet potatoes. The flavor is very sour with tons of synthetic lemon juice. It didnít seem old to me, just poorly crafted. Quite possibly the worst barley wine Iíve ever had.

2011 bottle at Stumbling Monk: obviously old, a little cardboard and heavy fruit. Dry-ish, some sugar and residual heat in the throat. Iíd drain pour it if someone hadnít paid $8 for it.

Hazy dark copper with a thin, sticky light tan head. Light carbonation. Funky aroma. Sour, yet malty and loaded with cooked veggies (donít know which ones but itís really disgusting). Sour (Iím talking beyond Lambic sour) and sticky with underlying hops and maybe some maltiness. Just too sour and the aroma and now some veggie flavor has leaked in. This is going in the drain. This has got to be a bad sample or theyíve created a new style of Barleywine.

I have now had to bottles of this and they both failed tremendously. First bottle was flat. Second bottle, had lots of life as it poured but turned out to be sour as hell and terribly disappointing. What a shame.
