A Mes rate:
Cask handpull at GBBF. Black as night with no head. Malty, roasty, plenty chocolate notes and a malty coffee finish. Pretty good stuff.

Opaque black brown beer. Light marmite nose. Zero carbonation. Slight soft palate. Tangy porter like dark malt. Lots of cocoa dark chocolate and a splah of marmite. Well joined up but let down by a total lack of carbonation.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
500 ml bottle bought by a friend from the brewery. Bottle-conditioned dark brown ale with stout-ish leanings, affrom a mild ale as dark British ales get. A little to acrid at the start but mellowing with settling to reveal a raisin finish. The best beer I have tasted thus far from this long-established yet experimental brewer.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in May 2008. Cask, gravity dispense. Dull mahogany black in colour with a sparse tan head. Strong roast grain and coffee granules in the rich aroma. Creamy texture to the mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark complex malts give a rich moist maltloaf base with dark chocolate, mocha coffee, treacle toffee and ripe black grapes. Very little in the way of hop resins noted in the briefest of aftertastes. Finish is strong and malty with rich creamy caramel notes giving long sweetness throughout. Thought this was more of an Old Ale in style but superb stuff whatever. Worth seeking out in cask and highly recommended.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
750ml, corked & caged bottle. Poured black with dark brown edges and a small & creamy, slowly disappearing light brown head. Quite thick on the glass. Good mildly tangy prune and raisin, sweet chocolate and roasted malt aromas. Sharpish dark fruits, a decent dry roastiness and a tannic-like, vinuous finish. Soft, medium body with a lingering smokey aftertaste.

[500ml bottle from Iceni brewery shop, Jim shared with me - cheers!] Black, small beige head. Hefty roasted malt flavour dominates, but there is a little chocolate and blackcurrant hidden behind. Like all Iceni beers, it finishes dry. Thin and disappointing.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle @ RBESG Grand Tasting 2009. Deep dark brown color. Roastaroma with chocolate and vanilla. Soft roasty flavor with grapes and chocolate. Just a hint of in fection, but that works out fine in this beer.
