UPDATED: DEC 30, 2015 Initial rating, 5-19-09: 11.2 oz. bottle. Appetizing, sour aroma features apple, salt, rhubarb, and crabapple scents. Pours a hazy, almost opaque maroon to dull medium brown. Small amount of beige head. Sour, clean taste. Finish is slightly metallic and features a grapefruit or blood orange tang. Bubblegum and lemon juice flavors. Some light, dry bitterness. Easy to drink. Light to medium body. Lively in the palate. Ichtegem’s Grand Cru is not remarkable, but it certainly is drinkable. 7/4/7/3/13=>3.4. Re-rate, 12-30-15: 11.2 oz. bottle, consumed on 12-30-15. I didn’t realize I had rated this previously, albeit more than six and a half years ago. Labeled “18JUNI2019,” presumably a best by date, and presumably 5 years out from bottling date. Pours a reddish, medium brown with a small to moderate amount of beige head. Almost maroon in color. Produces good lacing. Nice color to the liquid. I believe the liquid is hazy, but it’s dark enough in shade that it’s hard to tell. Tart, caramel aroma. Scents of raspberry, red apple, toffee, and bubblegum. Pleasant, appetizing, light smell. Malty flavor shows barely a hint of tartness let alone sourness. Chocolate, prune, and strawberry flavors. Overripe red grape. Pleasant if underwhelming Belgian bruin taste, but I really wish there were a lot more in the way of sourness. Medium body. Reasonably lively. Easy to drink. Not a bad beer, but the aroma and flavor ought to be more extreme and powerful. I was about to call this an introductory sour, but it is so unsour that I wouldn’t even go that far. 7/4/6/3/12=>3.2. Combined rating: 7/4/6/3/13=>3.3.

bottle, red colour, medium white/orange head fading away quite slowly. Smells very fruity. Taste: sweet, cherry, woody, bitter, sour. Well balanced-easydrinking beer to drink fresh on hot summerdays.

On tap @ The Trappist. Dark copper brown with a two finger beige head, fair retention. Light vinegar, tart cherries, and old barrels up front. Saltines and sweet caramel behind. Flavor is still salty, but not really all that sour--I also wouldn’t call it bland by any means, but the flavor does seem muted. The cherries only show up in the finish, and the caramel turns more earthy. Finish is saltines with bitterness @ a 2, sourness @ a 2-3. Light carbonation with a light to medium body. Fair.

Bottle from Oak Tree. Slightly murky copper in color with a small lasting tan head. Earth, caramel, sour cherry, slight metal in the aroma. Taste: a bit sweet for a flemish red, caramel, some light sour cherry, light balsamic vinegar, and some metallic notes....

Pours dull, murky brownn with a thin tan head. Aroma of sour cherries and grpes, and a subtle oakiness. Subdued flavor of red wine vinegar and sour grapes. Light sourness, the oak shows up mostly in the finish, which fades quickly. Decent body, lightly carbonated. (11.2 oz. bottle)

What an average beer. This one poured to a really hazy brown body with a thin white head and spotty lacing. The aroma is weird. Buttered wood and pale malt. The flavor is very lightly sour with some brown malts but no nuttiness. Aged oak. Subtle. The palate is medium bodied. Boring!

On tap at the Malt House - Sexy mahogany pour with a small head. Smells acidic, with a vinegar and lactic character, with pretty aggressive cherries and dark fruit. Taste starts out woody, flows into a dry, fruity cherry taste, some acidic goodness, and finishes with more oak. The body is light-medium with a little too much harsh carbonation. A solid sour...I liked this one.

Bottle shared with funkybrewster. Pours a dark reddish amber with a fine fizzy beige head. Aroma is moldy cherry yogurt, touch of vinegar and berries. First taste is a nice woodiness, some cherry yogurt, fairly dry, lactic acid is not harsh at all, just moderately sour. Medium mouthful with a softer sizzling carbonation.

On Tap. Deep cherry with a large long lasting head. Tart fruit sweet malt with a hint of wood in the nose. A nice balance of sweet and sour fruit with an acidic undertone. Finishes slightly sour. A good intro to the style
