3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Appearance: dark purple with a short, fizzy, slightly bubbly head; not terribly much to look at. Aroma: nice sour nose of light balsamic vinegar and stone fruit, over a base of brown sugary malts. Taste: not nearly as sour as the nose indicates; rather, this is all about the fruit--lots of cherry, raspberry, plums, red and green apples, and some red grape juice. Finish: lingering slight fruity/cola sweetness, with decent carbonation prickles and just enough sourness to scrub the palate. Notes: This was lightly, delicately sour rather than the in-your-face sourness of, say, a Rodenbach. This beer was all about the fruit. It was more like a less tart lambic mixed with a less sour Bourgnone. It was a nice change of pace from the traditional sours I’ve had recently; alternatively, it would be a nice intro to the style for someone with little to no experience with sours. ME LIKEY. Bottle from the Rare Beer Club under the Strubbe’s Grand Cru aka.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Has decent funky sour nose. Palate is not very sour. Was really surprised how tame this one is. Dark fruit does add nice flavor profile.

Voilà une vieille brune qui vaut le détour ! Un équilibre quasi-parfait pour une dégustation agréable en tout point.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Purchased at Binny’s, May 2010. Everyone’s hosting sour beer events in advance of FoBAB, so I’m having one, too. With a soft French triple cream brie. Opened carefully since so many of my re-fermented beers have gushered, I instead get a happy "psssht!" and a deep, reddish-brown pours with a short, bubbly head. Smell is a little light in sourness. Probably a good thing, because my mind reaches to recall dirty gym towels for comparison. Luckily the taste helps drive that impression away. The usual tartness of sour cherries, but not very strong. Goes great with the last rinds of my cheese. In fact, after a bite of cheese, the beer seems sweeter. Alcohol is present, and of course it’s a little gassy. With all the strong flavors here, I can’t decided I taste the oak or not. I’ll just say being in a barrel gave it its own population of bugs for sourness.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours red with white minimal white head. Smells oaky, raisins, slight sourness. Has an interesting sweet and sour thing going on in the taste. Really sweet, I wish it had a little more balance with something because the flavors it does have are very good...just need something else to balance them. Overall, an okay beer- needs a little work to be great.

3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Aroma is very brette with hints of cherry and blackberry. Color is a fairly unattractive brown with a decent thin white head. Taste is a little uneventful. Very nice fruit forward beer with little or no sour taste. Flavor ends quickly. Just does’t have the bite it should. Enjoyed it, but wouldn’t get again.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours out a dark brown. As soon as it hit the glass I could smell the sourness. The aroma is sour with a hint of vinegar. The taste has the bite from the sour, but it is a nice refreshing beer. Flemish reds are one of my favorite styles and I really enjoyed this one.
