kramer (1888), sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA May 8, 2008 25 cl bottle, via jbrus. Pours an amber body with a slight ruby tint under a fizzy beige head that faded rather quickly. The nose is lots of wet sweaty grains with a touch of oxidation and cooked vegetal notes. The flavor is rather grainy and tired with no tart or sourness to speak of. There’s an unwelcomed caramel sweetness on the finish actually. Long lingering cooked celery flavor late on in the finish. Mouthfeel is too sweet and cloying for the style with moderate fizzy carbonation. Overall, one of the worst Oud Bruins that I’ve had. It’s weird that their Grand Cru version is so much better.
WeeHeavySD (1863), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Oct 5, 2008 750ml bottle thanks for the trade Tyler. Pours dark brown with a tan ring. Nose is light sour with a bit of rotten fruit. Taste is sweet and slightly sour. Very thin, very eh, another sour under the belt. kmweaver (2125), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Sep 22, 2008 11.2oz bottle, labeled "old brown", 5% alcohol, purchased from Embassy in Warren, MI. Pours a bright, slightly oily ruby color; minimal head formation. Lots of overripe red fruits, very lightly tart citrus and balsamic notes in the aroma; touches of metallic notes and quite overripe. Medium mouthfeel: again, lightly tart citrus and overripe red fruits (cherries, esp.); solid but not overly pungent balsamic character, and a decent amount of acidity; the metallic note seems even more pronounced at the beginning than the nose suggests, then starts to dissipate to mixed red fruits and reasonably pleasant citrus; messy, but not as flabby as many of the balsamic-laden sour ales. Medium finish: overripe red fruits, metallic notes, and balsamic; the metallic note lingers.
