Bottle from Booth’s, Ilkley, drank round Sas’ on Easter Sunday. Clear copper with slim cream foam. Caramel on slate with a rub of walnut aroma, hint of malt loaf. Soft bodied with typical Yorkshire stoniness and bittering hop bite; some caramel and cinder toffee, dust of chocolate. Solid.

Bottle, Booths, Penrith. Reasonably powerful hop aroma, the spicy bitterness is immediately apparent on the tongue and back of throat and is the dominating character of the beer. Slight smokiness towards the finish, very much an English brown bitter, but with much more character than a lot of its peers. Enjoyable.

Bottle. Chestnut gold. Thinnish off white foam. Caramel, spice, a little ash and some citrus on the nose. Citric pang on the tongue, without really being fruity. Mostly caramellic tastes, with some spruce resins. Finish is bitter, but again really lacks any particular taste... just bitter. Decent for a session, I guess.

500ml bottle. Caramel malt predominates. Copper colour, subsiding head. Aftertaste rather harsh. Overall: rather unbalanced.

500ml bottle - ruby red body, thin white head, heavy hoppy nose. A massive kick of hops, then a mouthful of sourness. Long aftertaste with a medium body, not bad.

Bottle, from Asda Scunthorpe. Golden brown, thin but lasting white head and gentle condition. Delicate toffee, banana and earthy hops in the nose, dry in the mouth but full flavoured, some earthy hops fight with a fruitiness and a trace phenolic note, slightly bitter finish with lingering earthy herbal hops.

Bottle. Reddish brown beer with a reasonable head. The aroma is toffee and hopped, and the flavour is fairly strongly bitter with a hopped, toffee and yeasty finish. Overall a pretty average bitter.

Pigs Ear. As ’Olicana Best’. Hazy brown beer. Light dry palate. Good malt base with a little unsweet toffee. The hops are aggressive for an English bitter. Grassy grapefruit. Finishes semi dry. Not bad - got some welly!
