COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular.
Ot doesn’t sound right, a dark India Pale Ale, but this beer is made with pale malts in the IPA style with just a bit of black and chocolate malts and roasted barley to darken the colour and introduce a roundness to the body. Lots of Summit and cascade hops produce a complex mix off flavours including mango, grapefruit and all round citrus

Cask @ The 17th Reading Beer and Cider Festival 2011, Reading, Berkshire England.

Clear medium to dark red brown colour with a average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, caramel, coffee, dusty, moderate hoppy. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is flat. [20110428]

On tap at Craft Beer. Clear dark brown beer, residual tan head. Semi dry palate, very mild carbonation. Odd beer! A tiny bit of dark malt, then quite a strong boiled sweets generic candy sweetness. However it finishes with some bitter piney hop! A bit messy but impossible not to like!

Cask at Cloisters. Deep brown, oaky highlights. Medium white head. Oaky, slightly vegetabley (pumpkin? Butternut squash?) and coffee nose. Rich, malty, slightly spiced palate with a hint of toasty hops on the finish. Interesting. More of a mild than an IPA.

Cask at Cloisters. Not a black IPA but rather an imperial black ale? Interesting aroma of coffee, caramel, prunes, raisins and dried fruits. Flavours of coffee, raisins, and a little smoke. Quite bitter and malty with a malt finish.

Cask at Bankers Draft, Bedford. Dark brown with a beige head. Sweet cereal malt aroma with a fruity sourness. This is also present in the taste, where it resolves itself into something resembling apple, though it’s mainly sweet and tarry, though not oppressively so. Sharp bitter finish. I liked this.

Several pints/halves throughout the day, The Larry (JDW), Nuneaton, 16/07/11. Deep ruby with a fine beige foam. Orange, berries, burnt toast snout. Chilled blueberry and mocha taste; some washy cocoa nuttiness, well done toast, soapy orange. No black IPA but very pleasant-drinking stuff.

Cask at the Willow Walk (JDW), Victoria. Deep chestnut with a dense beige head; autumn fruit aroma; smooth, with a sweet, fruity blackberry flavour and some nutty roasted malts; then a lightly bitter finish. Pleasantly refreshing.

Cask, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, Oadby. Dark brown with a firm beige head. Aromas are floral and piney with coffee and dark chocolate. Weetabix with liquorice and hints of citrus and raisin. Flavours are chocolate milkshake with bittersweet pine, bitter grapefruit, gritty coffee and dark chocolate. Peppery and dry to finish. Surprisingly good.
