This traditional dark mild won the bronze medal at the SIBA Northern region beer competition 2010 as well as being voted the winner in its class at Bradford beer festival 2010. The blend of 5 malts used in the mash give a smooth, mellow easy to drink malt flavour with a hint of liquorices in the finish.

50 cl bottle, Sheffield, UK via Beer Ritz Leeds. Cola appearance, thin head. Liquorice malt aroma, bittersweet flavour with a long heavily roasted malt finish.

Bottle Booths Penrith. Sweet malty aroma, but with a slight sour hint, which surprised me (BBE Sep 13). For a beer called ’Black’ this is very ruby red and reminiscent of a black country mild. Biscuit, medium roast, milk chocolate flavours, but that faint sour note reappears in the finish, however, there us some trace of whisky right at the very end which really adds another dimension to it.

(Cask at Cask Pub & Kitchen, Pimlico, London, 26 Apr 2013) Dark brown colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with dark bread, caramel and chocolate. Malty, roasted taste with notes of chocolate, dark bread, raisins, caramel and a gentle chocolatey bitterness in the finish. Light body, quite dry. Quite nice.

Fat @ Guildford Arms, Edinburgh.

Bottle. Deep dark brown almost black with a tan thin head. Smells like crispy bacon. In the mouth, there’s some nice roastiness like lightly burnt toast - a little nuttiness and seeds, some cereal, possibly a touch of light licorice. Finish is tasty with a little raisin and roastiness.

On gravity at the Volunteer, Bristol. Dark brown with a slight tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate with some roasted malts. Flavour had some caramel sweetness, more chocolate and a gentle, slightly fruity, finish. Good.

Cask at the Cask, Pimlico 22/10/12. slightly obscured dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that soon forms a pond and clears to the edges. Light roast malt aroma, touch of fart, light vegetal tones, hint of coffee. Taste follows nose. Light medium body with moderate carbonation. Not a great mild and assumes the classic ’W’ rating.

Cask pull at Craft Beer Co. Man, this was quite a velvety, roasty, deceptively mild beer. Looking and smelling and tasting for all the world like a very well rendered foreign stout, it nonetheless achieved some of the sessionable, understated qualities of a mild. Sweet flavors were present, but dry and roasty won the day for sure. Very impressive at 3.7%.

500ml bottle - looks like a glass of coke, no head, pure black. Feint smell of caramel, bit sweet, a bit mild coffee. Taste is a little kick of toast, and bitter chocolate, but little else.
