Midnight Ryder – a hat tip to Bischoff’s son, Elliott Ryder – is cloaked in mystery and full of surprises. A style of disputed origins and merit, American Black Ale puts a distinctly American twist on the India Pale Ale with five varieties of malt that give this dark beer a medium body and a complex array of flavors including caramel, chocolate and a smidgen of roast. Sealing the deal are six varieties of American-grownhops added throughout the 90-minute boil. This beer offers a resinous and piney character with just enough citrus to bring balance at the finish line.

Not a big fan of black IPAs, but this one is pretty good. Deep, dark pour. Aroma is a little scattered - bitter roast, dark chocolate, pine, citrus. Flavor is pretty similar, though a little more harmonious. The bitterness from the roast/hops combine to be pretty intense, but still manageable. Good creamy mouthfeel. Good brew.

Beer #2 of the night is a very hoppy robust black IPA. Lots of flavor for a low ABV beer. Tons of roast and citrus rind hoppiness. Good stuff.

Pour from a bottle purchased at the source. Dark mocha head, uber dark clear brown body. Not much lacing. Aroma is a bit weak, some light bittersweet coco, a touch of pine hops. Taste, though, really shines. Lots of chocolate and roasted bitter malts, lots of pine hops. A touch soapy on the finish. Creamy mouthfeel. Nice beer, could just be a bit punchier on the aroma.

12oz can I picked up in a trade on BA. Pours near black with dark tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, and piney hops. Flavors of roast, chocolate, light pine and citrus, bit of earthy malt. Not as much hop presence as I was hoping for. Makes for a decent stout/porter none-the-less.

Can. Strong aroma and unexpected bitterness. Not bad, but I’d prefer a more roasty black than the bitterness in this one.

Can from portableparty. Deep brown to black pour with mocha head. Nose is tarry roasted malt, sweet pine, brown sugar, and some cracker. Flavor is a slightly acidic, but full silky roast with moderate pine, mild cocoa, and faint brown sugar. Lingering pine bitterness and semi-sweet chocolate/roast. A nice hoppy stout. While the aroma was pretty average, the flavor came through on this one. Thanks.

Draft at MacKenzie. Pours a deep brown color with tan head and some lacing. Aroma is chocolate, piney, some citrus. Medium on the palate with smooth, creamy carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, toast, nutty, pine hops, with a light bitter finish. Meh.

12 oz can from Zipps Liquors (Minneapolis, MN). Getting in the first grill of the year, yo! Pours a deep blackish hue, dark center, richer body with midnight ruby bottom and edges. A big cakey light brown ahead stays bigger sized, good lacing. Aromas are a richer black malt, mellow roast, bigger citrusy and pine hop presence. Chocolatey malts, some roast, dry pine and florals. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, bigger bitterness up front. Roasty touches, black malts, a good dose of piney and floral hops. Bigger dose of bitterness, touch of grapefruit rind. Really big bitter hop bite as we move into this baby. Grapefruit, pine, lemons, grapefruit juice. Really nice, gentle roastiness, biscuits. As I get more accustomed, some darker malts, cocoa jabs in and out. Mellow carmelization. Lingering and sustained bitter pine, grapefruit, and florals stick through the backend and finish. A bit soapy, firm pine. Nice fresh Black IPA that I’d love some more cracks at. Really nice. Nose is vibrant, head remains and laces well. Just a damn good one.
