COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Midnight Ryder – a hat tip to Bischoff’s son, Elliott Ryder – is cloaked in mystery and full of surprises. A style of disputed origins and merit, American Black Ale puts a distinctly American twist on the India Pale Ale with five varieties of malt that give this dark beer a medium body and a complex array of flavors including caramel, chocolate and a smidgen of roast. Sealing the deal are six varieties of American-grownhops added throughout the 90-minute boil. This beer offers a resinous and piney character with just enough citrus to bring balance at the finish line.

It tastes very similar to a jazzed up Daytripper. Maybe a little more on the bitter side but I still like it.

Pours a very deep brown, near black with a dark khaki head. Decent head retention with moderate lacing. Aroma is cascades, definitely dry hopped with cascades, and most likely brewed with the pacific northwest big C’s. Taste is a blend of dark roasts, caramel malts, and american hop finish. Really like this BIPA, and will replace my old favorite BIPA back in black as my go to.

A very tasty American Black Ale. Plenty of hops with lots of depth and character. The caramel, chocolate and roasted flavors come through nicely.

UPDATED: NOV 16, 2013 Pours a dark, dark brown with a fairly thick, lasting, creamy head. Aroma of coffee and roasted grain. Flavor is dominated by the roasted grain and coffee flavors up front, with some nice hop bitterness underneath. Nice smooth mouthfeel and finish. This is one of my favorite BIPAs and the one I most often compare others to.

A very good beer, black with generous head. A substantive roast, yet takes an appropriate submissiveness to the hop story. Very smooth drinker, with a roast not a coffee bitterness in the finish. The aroma of roast, chocolate, spruce, pine combs. Thanks John.

Pours very dark with a thick, lasting almond head and good lacing. Aroma is rich caramel, roasted coffee bean, pine and citrus hops - in that order. Taste is a wave of pine and roasted malts together. Roast is gentle in itself, but the cocoa coffee taste adds to the piney hops to form a lasting bitterness. Nice mild roast in the aftertaste, with the hops hanging on to sustain the bite. Palate is great - medium bodied, rich, and well carbonated. Overall this is a very good take on the style.

Tap @ Indeed. Pours a deep black appearance with a light brown head. Toasty chocolate malty, cocoa, piney, minty aroma. Rich roasty chocolate malty, light coffee, a touch burnt, sprucey, piney flavor. Excellent body and delicious stuff.

12 oz. can to glass. Pours brown black with a tight foamy (almost creamy) khaki head that settles to a foamy film a shows signs of lacing. Aroma has a well mixed scent of piny grapefruit hops and roasted malt and subtle bakers chocolate. Taste is bitter hops and then the roasted chocolate malt comes out and blends in well and has a nice spice finish. Palate is full and a little creamy with a dry finish. Really nice black IPA! Awesome to see some more amazing beer being made right here in Minneapolis!

Can. Rich dark black pour, thick half inch tan head and an aroma of chocolate malt, and oats. Flavor is nice hoppy chocolate, peat and piney on the aftertaste. Very nice, looking forward to trying a lot more of their beers.
