It tastes very similar to a jazzed up Daytripper. Maybe a little more on the bitter side but I still like it.

In short: A highly roasted piney-citrusy Black IPA. Above average execution of a typical take on the style. Very good.
How: Can 12oz, consumed fresh a few weeks after receiving it from oakbluff, thanks a lot Scott.
The look: Black body topped by a large dark-beige head with good retention.
In long: Nose is rather hoppy (mostly piney but also a bit citrusy) with also plenty of roast, enough roast to push forward a roasted coffee beans aroma. Taste has plenty of roast, some overcooked caramel, burnt wood sensation, bittersweet black chocolate, burnt brown sugar, a shot of espresso, assertive fresh piney bitterness with grapefruity edges. I could feel quite a bit of sweetness from this rich maltiness but the high roast level and piney hop character make for an overall dry sensation. Body is fuller than most hoppy beer of this gravity, carbonation is very lively, true Belgian Ale type of mouthfeel. Not a hop-bomb, bitterness intensity is medium, this is actually a well balanced Black IPA. Nothing original here, I’ve had similar beers many times before, it’s just that this one is of superior quality. I like a beer that is well balanced in which malts and hops perfectly balance each other, I even like words that are well balanced in which consonants and vowels perfectly balance each other, my favourite one is “beer”.

Dark with caramel head. Hoppy nose. Rich maltiness comes out big later in the flavor. I get something a bit too bitter, suggesting a tackiness with time. Can.

Can thanks to a trade! Pours black with a chalky brown that lasts throughout the beer and laces slightly. Aroma has roasted malts and a bit of chalky pine hops with just a hint of grass. Flavor starts with roasted musty malts with a good amount of pine and hints of grass and chocolate.

Can from a generous trader. Pours black with tan head. Nose and taste of roasted chocolate malt, dark roast, dank resin, pine and grapefruit. Bitter grapefruit/resin and pine finish with some chalky roast. Mouthfeel is a little lighter than medium.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 madvike (2090) - Middleton, Wisconsin, USA - APR 8, 2013
Can - Pours black with a creamy tan head. Nose is juicy citrus and pine hops that are overwhelmed a bit by the roasty malt. Taste has some more chocolate, medium roast, a little coffee, and more of the juicy hops. Finishes pretty roasty, along with some pine hops. Real thin in the mouth, with some light carbonation. A little roastier than I like my black IPAs, but still tasty.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 BeerBeforeH20 (47) - Minnesota, USA - APR 5, 2013
Pours a very deep brown, near black with a dark khaki head. Decent head retention with moderate lacing. Aroma is cascades, definitely dry hopped with cascades, and most likely brewed with the pacific northwest big C’s. Taste is a blend of dark roasts, caramel malts, and american hop finish. Really like this BIPA, and will replace my old favorite BIPA back in black as my go to.
