COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Midnight Ryder – a hat tip to Bischoff’s son, Elliott Ryder – is cloaked in mystery and full of surprises. A style of disputed origins and merit, American Black Ale puts a distinctly American twist on the India Pale Ale with five varieties of malt that give this dark beer a medium body and a complex array of flavors including caramel, chocolate and a smidgen of roast. Sealing the deal are six varieties of American-grownhops added throughout the 90-minute boil. This beer offers a resinous and piney character with just enough citrus to bring balance at the finish line.

A very tasty American Black Ale. Plenty of hops with lots of depth and character. The caramel, chocolate and roasted flavors come through nicely.

Poured from can into a tulip glass. Light black color with off white head. Deep resins and pine from the hops. Chocolate and caramel from the malt. Nicely balanced black ipa.

Tap at Ward 6. Reddish black with a tan head and heavy lacing. Piney and lemon hops, burnt sugar and tea. Taste is sweet with a piney bitterness. Medium body with a foamy feel.

12 ounce can. Pours a dark brown color with a medium white head. A sweet chocolate nose with some smoke. Bitter rye, oranges, chocolate, dark malts, lingering rye bread. Pretty mellow.

750 ml bottle I got in a trade with queenholly. Thick lasting tan foam chillin on top of a pitch black liquid. Great retention. Nose is chocolate, ash and resin hops. Flavor starts lightly sweet with chocolate, followed by light coca with a lasting, real long lingering pine resin. The thing that is really surprising is this was bottled in 09 / 2012. It’s amazing how much pine still remains in the flavor. The texture is chalky with a dry finish. Real nice drinker.

12oz can pours a watery black with some creamy beige head. Nose is odd, whole wheat flour, dusty, a little meaty, some roast mushroom, some dark chocolate. Flavor is malty, some pepper, some mushroom, bread crust, a little cherry, molasses. Dry finish. So so.

What a great beer. Bracing coffee and hop aromas. Nice sweet and bitter coffee and hops. One of the best black ipas I’ve had.

Poured from a 12oz can. Aroma is pine, caramel, and chocolate roast. Flavors are pine, chocolate, coffee, and caramel. Well balanced beer just right amount of hops and malt to make the beer very drinkable. Well done indeed!

Can courtesy of TheHoff43: Hoppy charcoal and pine. Mahogany, medium tan head. Dry, char flavor with the bitterness coming more from the malt than hops. Hops are piney in nature, but really more in the background than anything. Medium body. A bit too dry for my taste.
