COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Midnight Ryder – a hat tip to Bischoff’s son, Elliott Ryder – is cloaked in mystery and full of surprises. A style of disputed origins and merit, American Black Ale puts a distinctly American twist on the India Pale Ale with five varieties of malt that give this dark beer a medium body and a complex array of flavors including caramel, chocolate and a smidgen of roast. Sealing the deal are six varieties of American-grownhops added throughout the 90-minute boil. This beer offers a resinous and piney character with just enough citrus to bring balance at the finish line.

12oz can shared thanks to JohnGonk. Pours a thin black color with a small foamy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, earthy hops, and grapefruit. Taste of weak roasted coffee, burnt toast, lemon rind, and grapefruit.

12 ounce can (from brewery)
Not having tried anything from Indeed I was curious after coming away with a six pack at the Great Taste of the Midwest. A solid black IPA has few flaws and makes me want to actively seek out a few more offerings the next time I find myself in Minnesota.

Aroma / Appearance - A fluid black base pours with a rich chocolately texture. Soft edges and minimal head give it nice contrast. Chocolate, earthy hops, and warmth permeate the air like a malty porter.

Flavor / Palate - Burnt caramel, chocolate, and muddy hops sweep across the tongue. Transitioning to a smooth finish the texture is refreshing without being harsh. I wish I could have tried a few at the festival now.

Deep black pour with a creamy, brown head. The aroma has roasted malt, pine, and some dark chocolate. It has a medium body with creamy texture and soft carbonation. The taste is mildly bitter with a very dry, roasted finish.

Can from Zipp’s in Minneapolis. Dark caramel roast, dark fruits, chocolate, and hop blend. Dark roast initial / carbonation and strong hopping take it up into a slightly harsh resinous attack / floats back down into pleasing bitter notes. Medium body. Interesting mouthfeel and flavor progression. Very tasty and unusual stuff.

Can from a buddy. Very dark brown, not much foam. Hoppy aroma with some roast. Nicely balanced flavor: hops, roast, ash, coffee grounds. Solid beer.

Sampled at brewery during RBSG. From notes. Coffee and citrus makes for a real winning combination. Diggin it.

9/29/13. 12oz can thanks to ZMDR1975. Almost black pour with a small tan head. Dank hop aroma, touches of roasted malt aromas and acidity. Milder flavor than expected, some roast, chocolate, coffee, etc. with mild hop character. Tasty enough.

Can to tulip (shared by Brigadier). Looks good; a dark brownish black with foamy light beige head that dissipates into lacing. Smells good; dark malt, dark chocolate, hops, and roast. Tastes like it smells, but less robust. Nice and smooth on the palate. Good beer.
