COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Midnight Ryder – a hat tip to Bischoff’s son, Elliott Ryder – is cloaked in mystery and full of surprises. A style of disputed origins and merit, American Black Ale puts a distinctly American twist on the India Pale Ale with five varieties of malt that give this dark beer a medium body and a complex array of flavors including caramel, chocolate and a smidgen of roast. Sealing the deal are six varieties of American-grownhops added throughout the 90-minute boil. This beer offers a resinous and piney character with just enough citrus to bring balance at the finish line.

Can. Rich dark black pour, thick half inch tan head and an aroma of chocolate malt, and oats. Flavor is nice hoppy chocolate, peat and piney on the aftertaste. Very nice, looking forward to trying a lot more of their beers.

355 ml can via Piscator 34 (thanks again my friend!). Pours a nearly opaque brown with a nice thick chocolate colored head. Aroma is citrus, toast, touch of pine, and a little molasses. Taste is roasty malt, almost coffee like, perhaps a touch of alcohol. Full, smooth mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Very nice beer, well done Josh!! Reminds of me a harder version of Mill Street Coffee Porter.

Very dark brown pour, a thumbs worth of tan head. Aroma of spruce, pine, dark cocoa, coffee. Bitter up front, pine, spruce, slight citrus fruit, some coffee bitterness, cocoa, roasty. Medium body. Everything works well together here - Sessionable, with tremendous balance.

Pours dark with a nice foam head and huge lacing. Aroma is outstanding with incredibly fresh pinecone and floral hops. Taste is a hop bomb with a floral bouquet and a nice piney flavor. Really nice black ipa. 1st class.

Had it out of a can, poured a dark brown hue with a mild malt coffee aroma. The taste is a perfect marriage between a hoppy IPA and some coffee mall!

Can. Pours a flat black body under a nice frothy light brow head that had excellent retention. The nose is a mixture of roast, chocolate malt, citrusy hops, and a little bit of a floral note. The flavor is a perfectly balanced mixture of chocolate malt and bitter fresh hoppiness up front, with the roast emerging a big stronger on the finish. Great lingering citrusy finish that really hangs around. Medium bodied with a slight resiny cling from the hops. Moderate fizzy carbonation. Excellent beer, just about perfect Black IPA for my tastes.

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2012 Cask version at brewery; double dry hopped with glacier. This aroma is nothing if not weed brownies, but there’s a lot of other shit going on. Vinous character, citrus zest, dark spice, wood, coffee. It’s kind of a lot to take in, but it’s a power punch that feels good. The flavor brings a lot of pithy hops and deep roasted coffee and tobacco tones that doesn’t feel especially awesome, or overwrought, but just always really huge. Palate is fulsome and bright with tropical bittersweetness; finish draws out at length with acidic, ashy coffee notes and a parting embrace of stone fruit skin and resin that doesn’t let go. Complicated stuff. Worth a bit more contemplation, for sure.

On tap at Happy Gnome. Pours a black color with tan head. Dark, malty, piney aromas. Very tasty black ipa.
