12oz can, courtesy of MatSciGuy. Thanks, Levi! Really dug this one. Pours a deep chocolate-brown, with a pillowy tan head that lasts; great lacing. Bitter chocolate, a hint of caramel, and some nice citrusy/piney hop character in the nose; focused and engaging. Medium mouthfeel with medium-high CO2; a nice spritzy carbonation and citrusy hop liveliness at the front of the tongue; a sturdy grapefruit and piney bitterness at the core; around those core points of contact are those darker notes: bitter chocolate, milk chocolate, hints of an oily, toasty nuttiness (likely taking some of that oily feel from the hop resins); a really nice black IPA, one of the best I’ve had.

12oz can from some kind individual. Opaque brown-black body with a big, foamy, beige head. Oliy black malt and a steady citrus backbone. OK, not my favorite example of the style, a little sticky and sugary. Rich and full bodied, certainly not thin or lacking ingredients. Doesn’t quite come together.

On tap at Bulldog Northeast. Dark and hoppy up front. Lots of pine and herbal spice layered with smoky chocolate. Decent enough, but I am still not a big fan of this style.

Can courtesy of Kermis. Poured a deep mahogany with a broken white tan head. The aroma is grassy hop, leading to a smooth, weak liqourice bitter smoky flavour. A superb and rather unusual beer.

Aromas of caramel, chocolate, coffee, with faint hops in the background. Beautiful pour, pitch black with dark tan head, very frothy. Smokey, roasted malt in front, followed by bitter chocholate, hint of vanilla. Finishes dry and bitter, but not hoppy bitter, more like dark chocolate. Decent but more like a porter.

Can shared. Pours almost black with tan head. Aroma of big roasted malt, grassy hops, light citrus, resin and light chocolate. Flavour is over moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with light carbonation.

I have had this several times. Most recently from a bottle purchased on the brewery’s opening day. Well roasted malt giving mild coffee and chocolate flavor, as well as moderate hops. Solid palate, and biter finish. I am not a huge fan of this style, but Midnight Ryder pulls it off better than most.

Tap in Republic, Minneapolis. Serious beer this. Dark black. Roasty bitter dry malty flavours, long malty feel, then transition to bitter hop finish. Yeah good stuff.

Bottle. Poured black with resilient mocha head that clings to the glass. Aroma is rich malt, chocolate, molasses, slight cream. Taste is burnt chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, slight resin, chocolate and cream sweetness.
