On tap at Groveland Yap, nice dark ruby pour with a frothy white head. Big intense aromas of ginger as well as flavor, kind of weird but kind of interesting.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Amy! Clear dark brown pour, light, thin lasting head and an aroma of sweet (but not overpowering) fresh ginger. Flavor is nutty caramel, mellow ginger & clove and finished a bit sweet. Decent and worth picking up at least once.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 ml bottle. Pours a dark copper brown color with a soapy frothy khaki head that settles to a soapy film and collar. Aroma has strong ginger coriander some cinnamon. Taste shows roasted malt subtle chocolate toffee and plenty of ginger cinnamon coriander clove and has a soft bitterness. Palate is thin to medium with a rather harsh finish. Decent brew, but over spiced for my taste.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
December 15, 2012 on tap at brewery. Orangish brown pour with head and lacing. Malt, spice and honey in aroma. Taste was consistent with aroma, very nicely balanced for a holiday ale not too much spice and finished with sweetness from the honey.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Clear reddened amber; the tepid appearance creates an early perception that this is weak and too thin. Gingerbread cookie, molasses, seared pineapple in the aroma. This ultimately lacks depth, but there’s an interesting development that takes place when the initially earthy, almost spruce like ginger root character reveals its pleasantly startling, unique spiciness. The flavor is all ginger and needles, supported by bland caramel, some brown banana and some soggy, leafy earthiness. The malt makeup here doesn’t match up well with the alcohol level, and this can expose some medicinal qualities. Thin palate causes the pressure of sugars to feel more intense than it ought to. The fresh ginger is the saving element for me here, to a point.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle pours a dark amber/brown with a large khaki head. Aroma of ginger and honey with caramel and toffee malts. Taste of ginger and sweet honey in to some earthy toffee and caramel malts finishing with some earthy bitterness. Not overly complex but enjoyable.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
(bottle) Pours a clear red color with a large off-white head that settles to a thin cap with a good amount of lacing. Aroma immediately yields a good dose of cooked ginger, with another smell that is eerily reminiscent of a Jimmy John’s Italian Night Club sub sandwich. Not sure if that’s good or not,but it sure is damn odd. Definitely pick up some breadiness, which accentuates the sandwich qualities. Glimmers of honey shine in. Flavor is really insipid when cold, and tastes like a run of the mill amber ale with just a faint ginger kick on the finish. Not getting much else going on here initially. Warming yields a more prominent tone of honey, which is fairly enjoyable. It grows even more so as this warms. Seems like they used the pure stuff, as that musty quality is perceived. In fact, it tastes a lot like the pure and raw wildflower honey from Luverne, MN. Mouthfeel is medium and carb is pretty appropriate, maybe a touch on the spritzy side. Overall the beer isn’t too bad, and it grew better as it warmed up.
