3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 pants678 (13) - Ft Worth, USA - OCT 2, 2007
I couldn’t get a good head going on this one, must’ve been a bad pour. Anyways, smells potently of coffee and a strong but not over powering chocolate taste (the carbonation combines with it nicely). The body’s not too heavy, I could easily have more than one in a sitting.

12 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown with a moderate-large tan head that lasted through the first two sips and left light lace. Pleasant aroma of crystal malt with a few notes of caramel. The flavor is malt with some nuts and very mild chocolate. Mild bitterness at the finish. Medium bodied. A bit timid, but no problems.

Independence brewing bootlegger brown ale - starts by gushing, reddish brown with thin brown ring. Bad start. Rubber band and acetone, tons of plastic, notes of a brown ale very hidden. The taste is less plasticy but that still dominates. Seems to be infected or just plain bad. Notes of chocolate malt, light brown malt, and coffee. Burning carbonation and thin body. Not enjoyable.
4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 SPDickerman (426) - Texas, USA - MAR 22, 2012
Pours dark mahogany with a tiny fizzy ring. Smell is reminiscent of chocolate and nuttiness. Taste is chocolate, toffee, caramel, hints of nuts, and some mild hop bitterness. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Independence Brewing Bootlegger Brown Ale finishes with a touch of smooth chocolate.

Rich dark color with a note of coffee. Much better than I remembered it being. Would drink again.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 ChainGangGuy (3837) - Canton, Georgia, USA - JAN 24, 2012
Appearance: Pours out a dark amber-brown body with a huge, airy, monstrously expansive head.
Smell: Nutty malts, lackluster hints of chocolate and dark caramel. Sprinkling of top soil with soured fruit and a peculiar spice accent.
Taste: A sweet taste of dark caramel over coarsely chopped nuts with a bit of cocoa powder. Spoiled dark fruits. Zilch hop character or bitterness. Flash of acrid character. A pinch of smoked paprika. Dry, nutty, effervescent finish. Unclean aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. High level of carbonation.
Overall: It’s at best an odd duck and at worst flat-out strange. Tastes like an early attempt from a new homebrewer, so maybe the bootlegger name is fairly apt.
