Mostly black with a little bit of ruby brown shining through the edges. Thick mocha head with some lacing. Lots of chocolate in aroma. Some coffee and roastiness as well. Somewhat boozy. Thick mouthfeel. Chocolate leads the flavor as well. Some nuttiness and roastiness. Sweet finish. ---Rated via iPhone
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 Alphadelic (1637) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAY 18, 2013
100% opaque, not much of it’s thick head appears. The nose is richly roasted. In the mouth it is incredibly thick and heavy without becoming too cloying. The roast reappears as a heavy bitterness and a hint of licorice. There is plenty of buttery toffee sweetness in there too which pairs well with the thickness of the beer.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 ronaldtheriot (811) - Laplace, Louisiana, USA - MAY 9, 2013
Convict Hill Oatmeal Stout has a fairly thin, tan head and a very dark brown appearance, with red highlights under light. A thin lacing sheen is left behind on the glass. The aroma is of sweet, dark-roasted barley malt, cream, coffee, and chocolate. The flavor is of all those, plus some astringency, coal, and a mellow hop bitterness across the sip. Mouthfeel is pretty heavy and viscous, and Convict Hill Oatmeal Stout finishes dry, sweet, and wonderful. This is a delicious beer, and the drinker just does not pick up the 8% abv. Overall, I rate it most excellent. RJT
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 superspak (1534) - Michigan, USA - APR 24, 2013
I got this one in a trade with Cyde. 12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 11/4/2012. Pours pitch black color with a nice 1-2 finger fairly dense dark khaki head with good retention that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Some nice spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, oatmeal, caramel, molasses, light coffee, dark fruits, roasted malt, and roasted earthiness. Very nice and balanced dark/roasted malt aromas; with good strength. Taste of big chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, molasses, coffee, oatmeal, slight dark fruit, and roasted earthiness. Slight roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, caramel, coffee, molasses, and roasted malt on the finish for a bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of roasted/dark malt flavor; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and chewy mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden at 9.2%, with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent imperial oatmeal stout! Great robustness and balance of flavors; and very smooth to sip on. Really enjoyed this one.

(draft @ The Esquire - San Antonio, TX) Pitch black pour with a smooth and creamy tan head. Big roasted malt aroma with some coffee notes as well and some sweetness. Flavor is rich and creamy due to the oatmeal with a smooth but very pronounced chocolate and roasted bitterness.

Draught. Pours a near black color with a moderate off-white head. Nose has some nice roasting elements to it. Taste is also roasty, but seems a bit muddled to me. Smooth though.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle thanks to errl. Pours a viscous black with a khaki colored head of foam with decent retention. The aroma is ashy, roasty, mildly fruity, heavily roasted malt. Taste is earthy bitterness and just slightly sweet. That ashy note from the aroma is fairly dominant. Its distracting, but not unenjoyable.
