evilempire (112), sheffield, South Yorkshire, England Mar 4, 2008 had at the brewpub, and must admit i was disappointed by this. maybe I caught it on a bad day, but it seemed to lack something, it was possibly overly roast/burnt, and just wasn’t easy to drink

goldtwins (3721), Nesconset, New York, USA Aug 23, 2007 Tap @ the brewpub. Dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma was of spent coffee grind and some mild creamy chocolate. The flavor was roasty with a big sweetness. Light to medium body. shrubber85 (2462), Wallhalben, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany May 5, 2007 Tap at brewery. Smoky coffee and dark chocolate aroma. Opaque black color with moderate head. Creamy chocolate and smoky coffee flavor. Light bodied and smooth. TheBeerLover (1011), DC Metro Area, USA Apr 14, 2007 Sampled on draught at the brewpub in Philadelphia, PA. Pours to a jet black color, with a thick, creamy, tan head, and a soft carbonation. The nose on this beer is very nice, with lots of good dark chocolate, sweet malt, and fruity estery aroma of black currant. The palate is soft, silky, and creamy, with good flavors of chocolate, lightly roasted coffee, and estery flavor of currant. This beer finishes with more good dark chocolate, and coffee flavors up front, then ends with a slightly bitter sweet dark chocolate flavor that lingers. A very creamy, and delcious, sweet stout. Makes for a nice beer to enjoy at the brewpub, and an ideal match with the deserts on the menu. My favorite of all the Independence beers I tried.
