2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
500 ml bottle sampled in 2009. Hazy orange golden body with a big, foamy white head, high carbonation. Aroma is refreshing floral with some fruit and very little banana. Flavor is light malty, fruity, floral spicy and quite sweet. Doesn’t taste like a hefe weissbier at all.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Spring is finally here, it’s time to pop this year’s first hefeweizen! It pours a cloudy medium yellow body with a faint orange tint. Some enormous lumps of rather disgusting looking dark brown goo slowly descend to the bottom of the glass, while the large, white head is already shrinking disappointingly fast. A good amount of lacing sticks to the glass. The aroma is moderate and has notes of general fruitiness and pale malts, without much banana, while the typical aromas for the style are quite vague. There are some light but pleasant yeasty notes, some spices and citrus, but these elements should be so much stronger. Still, nothing very wrong with the aroma, just too faint and boring for the style. The taste is moderate to light sweet, I find this sweeter than most hefeweizens. The body is also fuller than the typical beer of this style, so I guess the increased sweetness is caused by residual sugars. There is a very light acidity in the finish, also hints of bitterness. The flavours are quite faint, with only traces of pale malts, caramel, yeast, spices and fruits. No off-flavours, though. The carbonation is too soft, and the texture is unusually oily. A bit boring, a bit too sweet, too faint aroma and flavour and not very true to the style, but it’s still drinkable. And the name is fantastic!

2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Bottle from Vaaland Spesialbutikken, Bryne. Slightly hazy yellow body, big white head. So far, I buy into the hefeweizen sale of this beer, but already in the aroma serious doubts arise: only a few vague citric and floral hints surface, and with the taste it’s even worse: citrus, wheat and hints of spices. I can swear I get coriander in there, although nothing of the sort is listed on the bottle. Way more into the "wit" category than a German hefe, and in any case this is not too exciting anyway. Kinda watery palate. This is, all in all, a pretty wishy-washy beer that fails to deliver the "weiss"bier as promised on the bottle. And, as I hate feeling cheated by a beer, my rating will reflect this. Fake ass style bitaz get no props, farm brewery or not. :-P
