3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 TheOrange (479) - Kent, USA - AUG 8, 2011
From a sampler pack.
Pour deep opaque mahogany. Little to no bubbles to make a head.
aroma is rich sweet caramel.
The rye is pronounced, which is nice to give fellow samplers an idea of what rye should taste like.
The beer is short, sweet and medium bodied.
An ok beer. Pretty enjoyable.

12oz bottle thanks to Ryan011235. Unappealing cloudy ruddy brown color with a small light beige head. The aroma has caramel, rye, and some toast/biscuit with a strange hint of wet dog. A caramel and toasty malt base and...wait a minute...WHY IS THIS SOUR? A distinct tartness reminiscent of a Flemish red, which is really out of place in this beer. Was this intentional? Strange mouthfeel with medium body and a weird biting sour note. Another WTF-worthy beer from Indigo Imp. These guys...
2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 Ughsmash (5836) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - OCT 9, 2011
Bottled. Poured clear reddish-amber with a shortish-lived yellowy-beige head. The aroma picked up sour lemon and orange rind with a bit of a metallic twist.. some rye plus a whole lot of redder fruits behind.. smells like it might be infected. The flavor confirmed that it’s either infected or just not very good.. metallic citrus bit the tip of the tongue.. some nutty and molasses sugars followed.. rye just gave a slight peppery impression around (but it was mostly metallic sourness out there).. finished sour and grainy. Light-medium bodied, dry, and grainy as mentioned.. way too sour.. not good.
2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 Dogbrick (4842) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - SEP 6, 2011
Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 09/02/2011. The beer is a cloudy copper-brown color with a thin off-white head that recedes quickly. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of molasses, tart fruit and grain. Light to medium body with an odd mildly sour character that seems reminiscent of other beers from this brewer I have tried. Notes of grainy malt and sweet caramel in the background. The finish is tart and fruity with a short sour aftertaste. Not impressed with this one.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of Brigadier. Hazy red/brown body with a creamy tan head. Roasty rye malty and a touch nutty nose. A touch sour, roasty rye flavor with a touch of nuttiness. Pretty crappy.
2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Brigadier (1940) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - APR 25, 2011
12 oz bottle
The last part of a sampler was this red ale. Even with lowered expectations it was thoroughly average in all ways. The best part was when I looked down and the glass was finally empty. There are not any gaping flaws. At the same time there is no incentive to savor a half hearted effort.
Aroma / Appearance - The deep ruby red body is average until you look closer. Looking a bit thin around the edges the head only accents this flaw. Rather than holding together it floats like dusty sprinkles. A lifeless mixture of mud, sugar cookies, and old rye do little to snap the senses to attention. The total package smells a bit like a teapot which has dried out under a summer sun.
Flavor / Palate - The heavy rye is a bit much in contrast to the other flavors. Even the hops are flat and uninspired throughout each taste. Like pieces of Twizzler candy stuffed between two pieces of rye bread from a discount grocer it fails to do more than pass the time. Even with low expectations this was a bit of a mess.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Nephilium (954) - Ohio, USA - APR 8, 2011
This starts with a slightly sweet aroma, with just a hint of rye. Pours a cloudy reddish brown, with a thick off-white head. There’s a bit of tartness present in the beer itself, with just a touch of roasted malt notes coming through. A drinkable beer, but not something to go out of your way for, and something to avoid if you don’t like sours at all.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MrBunn (2053) - Western, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 5, 2011
Bottle. Pours a very cloudy light/medium brown with a thin head and very weak aromas... brown sugar? Maybe I’m off, but I can’t pick up much of anything in the nose other than a little sweet and some non-descript spice. Flavor is odd as well... kind of that funk that I’m starting to associate with Indigo Imp... like a slightly soured version of what might otherwise be considered a Rye beer. Who the heck put this as a Dubbel? It has a sweetness to it that transitions to a kind of tart (pie cherry and peach pit) tanginess. Interesting, to say the least.

This is fiend red rye ale, not a abbey dubbel, DUH! From a bottle, looks like I’m lucky to try it. Got the bottle from vintage estagtes, nice place and nic e eye candy. Muddy dark pour which is brown but not real dark. Thin pond scum head. A sour aroma which is mild and quite farmy, YUM! . Now, this is why I like these indego imps beers, everyone I ever tried has some sour thing going on and I like that, yes very nice sour tart thing. Also, these beers never fail to be a little sizzly, and so is this. Not over the top in a ny way and i find this beer to be quite acceptable for a dubble and aint that funny, I think the beer style category for this is way off, it should be listed in the rye style, you know; specialty grain if RB hasn’t created a rye style that is. Yes because right on the label its says red rye ale. Now for the long session taste; farmy background withah absence of hop bitter ness that I am thankful for. So what makes this a dubbel? Go figure, hehheh. Even tho it is not really a dubbel, I would say if cantellon ever made a mild one, this would be it, YUM! Very nice pleasant beer drinken rye experience! THIS BEER &THIS BRAND ROCKS!
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 joshwilfong (1200) - Cleveland, Ohio, USA - MAR 20, 2011
red with mild white head. nose of malt sweetness and house yeast tartness. little bitterness before some sweet and spicy malt notes with the house yeast providing an overriding tartness. this brew works better than the stout due to the increased sweetness tempering the tart yeast component. overall the beers taste very similar given the yeast being so dominant
