mgermani (665), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Mar 27, 2007 Wonderful malty, peaty aroma - some caramel and hops too. Pours a dark amber with a minimal head. Mild sweet malt taste, good hopping, still that signature Innus & gunn oak taste which I can’t quite wrap my tastebuds around. Creamy body, good carb. The additional hops and slightly darker character lead me to prefer this beer to the regular 77-day aged variety, but I’m still not a bid fan.
TheJester (521), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Dec 29, 2008 (from notes - year old bottle) 330 mL bottle. Dark amber brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of vanilla and malt. Flavour has smoothes and filled out considerably after a year of aging. Malt, oak and even chocolate are present in the flavour. Alcohol bite has mellowed. Much better than "fresh." PictouRx (20), Ontario, Canada Jul 26, 2008 A stronger beer, found at LCBO new item on inventory. Clear amber colored, smooth, oak palate, can defintely taste the toffee and vanilla. So far never encountered a beer like this before. Lubiere (3524), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada May 24, 2008 A dark mahogany amber ale with a thin dissipating white head. Aroma is pleasantly woody, light olives , a bit of burned sugar, and rather musky. In mouth, I tend to agree with Todd. Lots of residual sugars which do not meld with the oaky notes, a lot of sweetness in final, a bit thin. Overall, disappointing. Bought at the LCBO late 2006. CapFlu (3364), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Feb 29, 2008 (330ml bottle) Obtained via trade with Lubiere in 2006. Pours a thin, white dissipating head with a deep brownish-orange body. Nose of whiskey and red wine. Flavour is awfully sweet and grossly whiskey. Pretty bad... another reason I don’t like barrel-aged beers. TheGrandMaster (1617), Auckland, New Zealand Feb 8, 2008 (Correction - 11/18/2006) Bottle, courtesy of Bradley, a darkish brown with ruby tints, a large foamy head the disippated fairly quickly. Aroma isn’t strong, but is definitely oaky - but sweetish, so like oak sap. Peaty whiskey flavours come through in a relatively light palate, rich and warming all the way through with a little bit of chocolate in a smooth finish. A good late night tipple.
