Lubiere (4462), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada May 24, 2008 A dark mahogany amber ale with a thin dissipating white head. Aroma is pleasantly woody, light olives , a bit of burned sugar, and rather musky. In mouth, I tend to agree with Todd. Lots of residual sugars which do not meld with the oaky notes, a lot of sweetness in final, a bit thin. Overall, disappointing. Bought at the LCBO late 2006. CapFlu (3480), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Feb 29, 2008 (330ml bottle) Obtained via trade with Lubiere in 2006. Pours a thin, white dissipating head with a deep brownish-orange body. Nose of whiskey and red wine. Flavour is awfully sweet and grossly whiskey. Pretty bad... another reason I don’t like barrel-aged beers. TheGrandMaster (1845), Auckland, New Zealand Feb 8, 2008 (Correction - 11/18/2006) Bottle, courtesy of Bradley, a darkish brown with ruby tints, a large foamy head the disippated fairly quickly. Aroma isn’t strong, but is definitely oaky - but sweetish, so like oak sap. Peaty whiskey flavours come through in a relatively light palate, rich and warming all the way through with a little bit of chocolate in a smooth finish. A good late night tipple. KwaiLo (3), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada does not count Dec 7, 2007 My first beer rating.
I have had this bottle in my cellar since ast December.
Medium light brown head, lasts a long time as does the lacing.
Heavy peat, molasses and perfume smell, right from opening the bottle.
Medium body, medium carbonation with an astringent finish.
Average lasting flavour of some port, wood, peat and scotch.
yngwie (4880), Kristiansand, Norway Nov 9, 2007 Bottle, shared by papsoe. Clear, copper beer with a beige head. Malty, slightly peaty nose with some alcohol and sugary sweetness. Malty, slightly sugary flavor with some peat and alcohol, and a vague sourness as well. Full body. I like it. It feels a bit ordinary despite it’s peatyness, and I am uncertain if it deserves my rating, but I guess it does. (071005) Papsoe (14613), Frederiksberg, Denmark Oct 8, 2007 (Bottle 33 cl) Courtesy of Sammy. Pours a clear, warm, dark amber golden with a somewhat rough, off-white head. Sweetish aroma of wood and whisky. Medium body with a little caramel and lightly burned whisky notes. There’s a vague tartness underneath all of this. 051007 yespr (11613), Copenhagen O, Denmark Oct 6, 2007 33 cL clear bottle (limited edition 2006). Pours amber to deep brown with a little lacing white head. Breadish roasted malt aroma, slight note of barrels. Flavour is malty and slight dried fruity, mildly woody. Ends mellow malty. Decent. DougShoemaker (2855), Toronto, Canada Aug 27, 2007 Fruit and malt taste, humbugs too, clear ruby, timid, short lived tan head. Taste is dominated by the oakiness, treacle and malt, alcohol is noted. Medium bodied,a bit harsh on the tongue. Average.
